“Continued from Achievements:This year we saw progress on our campaign to correct the politcal distortions caused by the Census Bureaus practice of counting incarcerated people as residents of the towns in which they are imprisoned rather than at their real home addresses. We organized 100,000 people to call on the Census Bureau to end prison gerrymandering, and the Census Bureau published two Federal Register notices about the issue. Thanks in part to last years research report, the state of Massachusetts opted out of an outdated federal law that automatically suspends drivers licenses of people convicted of drug offenses unrelated to driving. We are working on expanding this campaign to the remaining 12 states and D.C. that still enforce this relic of the War on Drugs.”

IRS990/Desc0Our mission is to use research, advocacy, and organizing to show how over-criminalization and mass incarceration harm individuals and undermine our communities and the national well-being. This years publication put state female incarceration rates into global context; prove that the cash bail system detains people because they are poor; give a more complete picture of correctional control; and explain the importance of in-person (as opposed to electronic) visitation with incarcerated people. Our work on communications led the Federal Communication Commission to approve an order that will lower the cost of calling home from prison and jails. We also submitted our research to the FCC, explaining how expensive and restricted electronic messaging is in prison and jails. Continued. See Schedule O.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Continued from Achievements:This year we saw progress on our campaign to correct the politcal distortions caused by the Census Bureaus practice of counting incarcerated people as residents of the towns in which they are imprisoned rather than at their real home addresses. We organized 100,000 people to call on the Census Bureau to end prison gerrymandering, and the Census Bureau published two Federal Register notices about the issue. Thanks in part to last years research report, the state of Massachusetts opted out of an outdated federal law that automatically suspends drivers licenses of people convicted of drug offenses unrelated to driving. We are working on expanding this campaign to the remaining 12 states and D.C. that still enforce this relic of the War on Drugs.
