Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8A

Document Meetings/Actions by Governing Body - It is a very small organization and directors are involved in the day to day running of the charity. There are no special committees needed because of the size of the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Organization process to review 990 - The 990 is reviewd with several of the board members before filing to confirm accuracy of the form.

Form 990, Part VIII, Line 1F

Contributions, Gifts, Grants - Our revenue comes primarily through local grants and in-kind donations. Many of our grant donors have been supporting Back to Basics for several years.

Form 990, Part VIII, Line 1G

Non-cash Contributions - Primarily, our in-kind product donations come directly from the community where businesses, churches, organizations, and individualsadopt a child and purchase and wrap the promised sneakers, socks, underwear and toy. we estimate these gift bag values average around 45. This year, 7,137 children were adopted by the community, which equates to an in-kind total of 321,165. We are always looking for more organizations to adopt more children sowe can help more. We also receive 10,000 pairs of socks from Bombas.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Section Section Summary, Line 6

Total Number of Volunteers - 375. Back to Basics is an all-volunteer organization with a core leadership team of 8 volunteers and core year-round team of 18 volunteers who help procure, organize and prepare the items needed for the Angel Program in the Fall. The 375 volunteers help primarily during the Angel Program from October thru December.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 24A

Functional Expenses - Uniform Program - This year the Uniform Program provded over 22,000 new school uniforms tops and bottoms to children in need in Palm Beach County. We have a strong partnership with a premier uniform manufacturer who has been working with Back to Basics since 2005. We have been acquiring their excess, discontinued and irregular uniforms at deeply discounted prices. Over time, their excess inventory has gone down and our needs have gone up, so in 2018, they began manufacturing uniform bottoms specifically for Back to Basics, still at the discounted prices.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 24B

Functional Expenses - Angel Program - The Angel Program provided 10,764 new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy for children in need in 2025. 7,137 of those gifts were provided by individuals in the community. The remaining 3,627 gifts were provided in house by Back to Basics and were funded through donor grants and in-kind donations. These gifts represent the bulk of the Program expenses. When we cannot get the products via direct in-kind donations, we work with wholesalers to find the deepest discounts and value purchases to acquire the rest. We build our inventory of sneakers, socks, underwear and toys to accomodate 6,000 gift packages, to ensure we can meet our in-house commitment, as well as fill in the blanks for any of the community gifts that may be missing items. If a childs name goes out to the community, and the gifts are not returned, we take care of it. If gift packages come back missing one of the 4 promised items, we take care of it. We are committed to ensure that ALL of the children that we serve through our program receive all of the gifts promised - new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy.

IRS990/Desc0The Back to Basics Uniform Program provides over 20,000 new school uniforms to elementary and middle school students identified by school administrators as experiencing financial instability or homelessness - circumstances that often contribute to chronic absenteeism. A clean, well-fitting uniform can determine whether a child attends school or stays home out of embarrassment. Teachers consistently report that students who receive uniforms return to class more engaged, more confident, and more willing to participate. In 2025, we provide 22,000 uniforms tops and bottoms to students across 60 schools and 5 outreach programs in Palm Beach County, ensuring children start the school year prepared, confident, and able to focus on learning. These schools serve some of the highest-need student populations in the county, with free/reduced lunch enrollment rates exceeding 70. The Uniform Program is supported primarily

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Back to Basics Angel Program continues to provide the Basics that children need to attend school - NEW Sneakers, Socks, Underwear - and because the program centers around the holidays, we also include a toy in each Angel Gift Bag. For many children, these may be the only gifts they receive. In 2025, we delivered 10,764 Angel gifts, restoring dignity, boosting self-esteem, and helping children return to school after winter break with renewed confidence. The Angel Program relies heavily on community participation from businesses, churches, organizations, and individuals who adopt children each year. Last year, the community adopted over 7,100 children, while Back to Basics provided gifts for the remaining 3,700 children with support from local foundations, which ensure that every child referred to us receives these essential items.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Total Number of Volunteers - 375. Back to Basics is an all-volunteer organization with a core leadership team of 8 volunteers and core year-round team of 18 volunteers who help procure, organize and prepare the items needed for the Angel Program in the Fall. The 375 volunteers help primarily during the Angel Program from October thru December.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Document Meetings/Actions by Governing Body - It is a very small organization and directors are involved in the day to day running of the charity. There are no special committees needed because of the size of the organization.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Organization process to review 990 - The 990 is reviewd with several of the board members before filing to confirm accuracy of the form.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Contributions, Gifts, Grants - Our revenue comes primarily through local grants and in-kind donations. Many of our grant donors have been supporting Back to Basics for several years.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Non-cash Contributions - Primarily, our in-kind product donations come directly from the community where businesses, churches, organizations, and individualsadopt a child and purchase and wrap the promised sneakers, socks, underwear and toy. we estimate these gift bag values average around 45. This year, 7,137 children were adopted by the community, which equates to an in-kind total of 321,165. We are always looking for more organizations to adopt more children sowe can help more. We also receive 10,000 pairs of socks from Bombas.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Functional Expenses - Uniform Program - This year the Uniform Program provded over 22,000 new school uniforms tops and bottoms to children in need in Palm Beach County.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6Functional Expenses - Angel Program - The Angel Program provided 10,764 new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy for children in need in 2025. 7,137 of those gifts were provided by individuals in the community.
