Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8A

Document Meetings/Actions by Governing Body - It is a very small organization and directors are involved in the day to day running the charity.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

Document Meetings/Actions by Special Committees - There are no special committees needed because of the size of the organization.

Form 990, Part VIII, Section B, Line 11B

Organization process to review 990 - the 990 is reviewed with several of the board members before filing to confirm accuracy of the form.

Form 990, Part VIII, Line 1G

Noncash Contributions - Primarily, our in-kind product donations come directly from the community where businesses, churches, organizations, and individuals adopt a child and purchase and wrap the promised sneakers, socks, underwear and toy. We estimate these gift bag values average around 45. This year 5,587 children were adopted by the community which equates to an in-kind total of 251,415. We are always looking for more organizations to adopt more children so we can help more. We also receive 10,000 pairs of socks from Bombas, as well as 3,000 Toys from MCS Warehouse.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Section Summary, Line 6

Total Number of Volunteers - 366. Back to Basics is an all-volunteer organization with a core leadership team of 8 volunteers and a core year-round team of 18 volunteers who help procure, organize and prepare the items needed for the Angel Program in the Fall.

Form 990, Part IV, Line 1F

Contributions, Gifts, Grants - Our revenue comes primarily through local grants and in-kind product donations. Many of our grant donors have been supporting Back to Basics for several years.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 24A

Functional Expenses - Angel Program - The Angel Program provided 10,215 new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy for children in need in 2023. 5,587 of those gifts were provided by individuals in the community. The remaining 4,628 gifts were provided in house by Back to Basics were funded through donor grants and in kind donations. These gifts represent the bulk of the Program expenses. When we cannot get the products via direct in kind donations, we work with wholesalers to find the deepest discounts and value purchases to acquire the rest. We build our inventory of sneakers, socks, underwear and toys to accommodate 6,000 gift packages, to ensure we can meet our in house commitment, as well as fill in the blanks for any of the community gift that may be missing items. If a childs name goes out to the community, and the gifts are not returned, we take care of it. If gift packages come back missing one of the 4 promised items, we take of it. We are committed to ensure that ALL of the children that we serve through our program receive all of the gifts promised - new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 24B

Functional Expenses - Uniform Program - This year the Uniform Program provided 21,600 new school uniforms to children in need in Palm Beach County. We have a strong partnership with a premier uniform manufacturer who has been working with Back to Basics since 2005. We have been acquiring their excess, discontinued and irregular uniforms at deeply discounted prices. Over time, their excess inventory has gone down and our needs have gone up, so in 2018, they began manufacturing uniform bottoms specifically for Back to Basics, still at the discounted prices.

IRS990/Desc0The Back to Basics Uniform Program, established in 2001, provides over 20,000 New School Uniforms annually to Palm Beach County Elementary and Middle School Children at the start of each school year. In 2023 we provided 21,600 new uniforms. Working directly with 60 of the neediest schools, the Uniform Program makes a life changing impact on the lives of underprivileged children in Palm Beach County. This Program is a critical part of empowering students through their appearance. It ensures that children from low-income families are not excluded or stigmatized because of their clothing. Through these ongoing efforts, we strive to create a level playing field in education and provide opportunities for a brighter future. Our goal is to double the number of uniforms over the next 3-5 years.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Back to Basics Angel Program, established in 1984, provides students with NEW sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy, for the holidays. Back to Basics provided the four promised Angel gifts to 10,215 children in Palm Beach County in 2023. For many of these children, this may be the only gift that they received for the holidays. The Angel Program is supported in part by the community. Back to Basics depends on the generosity of churches, civic organizations, businesses, and individuals in our community to adopt children each year to provide these gifts. This year 5,587 children were adopted by the community, who shopped for, wrapped and returned the gifts to our warehouse. Back to Basics provided the gifts in-house for the remaining 4,628 children. Our goal is to significantly increase the number of children adopted by the community.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Total Number of Volunteers - 366. Back to Basics is an all-volunteer organization with a core leadership team of 8 volunteers and a core year-round team of 18 volunteers who help procure, organize and prepare the items needed for the Angel Program in the Fall.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Document Meetings/Actions by Governing Body - It is a very small organization and directors are involved in the day to day running the charity.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Document Meetings/Actions by Special Committees - There are no special committees needed because of the size of the organization.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Organization process to review 990 - the 990 is reviewed with several of the board members before filing to confirm accuracy of the form.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Contributions, Gifts, Grants - Our revenue comes primarily through local grants and in-kind product donations. Many of our grant donors have been supporting Back to Basics for several years.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Noncash Contributions - Primarily, our in-kind product donations come directly from the community where businesses, churches, organizations, and individuals adopt a child and purchase and wrap the promised sneakers, socks, underwear and toy.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6Functional Expenses - Angel Program - The Angel Program provided 10,215 new sneakers, socks, underwear and a toy for children in need in 2023. 5,587 of those gifts were provided by individuals in the community.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt7Functional Expenses - Uniform Program - This year the Uniform Program provided 21,600 new school uniforms to children in need in Palm Beach County.
