Activity 2

Hunger-free communities - in 2012, the hunger-free communities initiative was significantly deepened and expanded. In february, the alliance hosted the second annual national hunger-free communities summit; a one day event that provided current and aspiring hunger free community organizers - nonprofit, religious, private sector and public sector leaders committed to ending hunger in their region - a forum to hear from experts about innovative models for building community coalitions to end hunger; share lessons learned and successful strategies; and learn about best practices to coordinate hunger relief, leverage available resources and implement multi-year plans. The alliance worked closely with local anti-hunger coalitions in toledo, ohio and fort pierce, florida, offering focused technical assistance to further the work of these coalitions. We also continued to maintain and expand our online portal, [www.hungerfreecommunities.org] the hunger-free communities network, for coalitions, campaigns and collaborations committed to ending hunger in their localities to learn from each other and share their knowledge and experience with other hunger free organizers.

Activity 3

In 2012 the alliance to end hunger continued its work through the national alliance partnership program, made possible by a grant from the international fund for agricultural development (ifad), to strengthen the capacity of civil society to participate, in a sustainable way, in the development, implementation, and monitoring of country-led agricultural development, food security and nutrition activities. The alliance partnered with existing or nascent alliances in three developing countries (ghana, kenya and uganda) to help them build their organizational and financial capacity; diversify their coalitions, with emphasis on engaging farmers and other food producers; and increase their capacity for advocacy and policy analysis in the areas of agriculture, food security and nutrition. The alliance received interaction's best practice and innovations award in 2012 for this effort.
