Broad street ministry food pantry:in the spring of 2011, broad street ministry opened the "bsm market" to provide the working poor and those on the brink of homelessness with healthy food for their families. The "market" is a major collaboration between bsm and philabundance, which channels the strengths of both organizations (bsm as a hosting venue with a city-wide reputation for radical hospitality, and philabundance as an established innovator in food-relief) in a joint effort to combat the alarming rates of hunger and malnutrition in philadelphia.the market combats the pain of hunger on multiple fronts. First, the market makes fresh, nutritious food available to those who would otherwise have limited grocery options due to their income level and where they live. Second, the market aims to increase the dignity and self-worth of people by allowing the food insecure to have full choice as to what foods they want or need. The market creates an experience for its clients that closely resembles a visit to the grocery store, and allows them to exercise the dignity of choice and the ability to select from foods that are delicious, fresh, and nourishing. Guests enter the bsm space, receive a cart to push, are free to walk aisles in haste or in leisure, and select from a wide variety of foods including fresh produce. Patrons have a wide variety of items available but no longer have to base their diet on price this is a store without restrictions.

Activity 3

The youth initiative is a program of broad street ministry that welcomes youth groups from all across the united states for a social justice immersion experience. The program values critical theological thinking, incarnational service opportunities and a curriculum that fosters processing and "what now?" thinking. Groups sleep and eat at broad street ministry. The youth inititative staff develops the program, plans the site visits and handles all other logistics. The program serves as an intentional bridge builder between suburban congregations and urban ministry.
