Form 990, Part III, Line 1

The urban compass model has been created to serve diverse communities in southern california and can be replicated across the country. This requires a well-structured framework for programmatic success, coupled with a commitment to modify each location to fit the individual make-up of the communities served. The vision is supported by three unique characteristics: urban compass was built in partnership with local schools to enable us to create programs that are specifically tailored to the needs of the community. Our programs involve local university students, faculty members and professionals to introduce participants to the possibility of going to college and beyond. We provide a stable and consistent presence in participant's lives, from kindergarten through high school and into college.

IRS990/Desc0PROGRAM AND ACADEMIC PROGRESS: URBAN COMPASS IS VERY PROUD OF THE CONTINUED ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT OF OUR STUDENTS. URBAN COMPASS IS A DATA-DRIVEN ORGANIZATION WHICH TRACKS VARIOUS STUDENT SCHOOL DATA POINTS (GRADES, ATTENDANCE, PROGRESS REPORTS, WORK HABITS, SOCIAL SKILLS, ETC.) THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO TAILOR OUR PROGRAMS AND MEET INDIVIDUAL STUDENT NEEDS ON AN ONGOING BASIS. WE CONTINUED WEEKLY READING ACTIVITIES AND FLUENCY ASSESSMENTS FROM THE READING A-Z ONLINE PROGRAM AFTER SEEING LOW SCHOOL READING SCORES. IN JANUARY, URBAN COMPASS WAS ALSO PROUD TO RECEIVE 50 NEW IPADS TO INCORPORATE INTO OUR PROGRAMS AND LAUNCH BLENDED LEARNING INITIATIVES; THIS ALLOWS FOR 1 IPAD FOR EVERY STUDENT! CLASSROOM VISITS AND OBSERVATIONS WERE ALSO IMPLEMENTED THIS YEAR TO HELP STAFF MAKE CONNECTIONS FROM THE SCHOOL DAY TO OUR AFTER-SCHOOL SESSIONS. AS A RESULT OF WEEKLY READING SUPPORT, 57% OF STUDENTS INCREASED THEIR WORD ACCURACY RATE ON FLUENCY ASSESSMENTS AND 22.4% IMPROVED THEIR ACCURACY READING LEVEL, MOVING UP TO THE NEXT STAGE IN FLUENCY. IN ADDITION, A COMPARISON OF FIRST AND FINAL REPORT CARDS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THAT STUDENTS ALWAYS IMPROVE FROM THE FIRST REPORT PERIOD, AS WELL AS IMPROVEMENT OF AT LEAST ONE GRADE LEVEL (EVEN IF NOT YET PROFICIENT). OUR GOAL IS TO STRIVE FOR STUDENTS TO EARN A 3 (PROFICIENT) OR 4 (ADVANCED PROFICIENT) ON THEIR FINAL REPORT CARDS.IN SUMMARY, OUR 2014-15 SCHOOL DATA HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:-THE % OF UC STUDENTS WITH 3 (PROFICIENT) OR 4 (ADVANCED PROFICIENT) IN READING IMPROVED 25.2%-THE % OF STUDENTS WITH A 3 OR 4 IN MATH IMPROVED 7.0%-THE % OF STUDENTS WITH A 3 OR 4 IN COOPERATION WITH OTHERS IMPROVED 23.8%-THE % OF STUDENTS WITH A 3 OR 4 IN HOMEWORK COMPLETION IMPROVED 5.6%-77.6% OF STUDENTS ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 3 OR 4 IN HOMEWORK COMPLETION-83.7% OF STUDENTS ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 3 OR 4 IN SCIENCE-91.8% OF STUDENTS ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 3 OR 4 IN P.E.-91.8% OF STUDENTS ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 3 OR 4 IN ART-FROM THE FIRST TO FINAL REPORT PERIOD, 24.49% OF STUDENTS IMPROVED BY AT LEAST ONE GRADE LEVEL IN MATH-FROM THE FIRST TO FINAL REPORT PERIOD, 42.86% OF STUDENTS IMPROVED BY AT LEAST ONE GRADE LEVEL IN READING-FROM THE FIRST TO FINAL REPORT PERIOD, 44.90% OF STUDENTS IMPROVED BY AT LEAST ONE GRADE LEVEL IN COOPERATES WELL IN GROUPSSCHOOL ATTENDANCE RATES FOR URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS CONTINUE TO EXCEED THE RATES OF 112TH ST. ALL 5TH GRADE AND KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY CULMINATED, AND 100% OF URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS MOVED ON TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL, AFFIRMING THAT ALL STUDENTS MET THE GRADE-LEVEL STANDARDS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PARTNERSHIPS, SPECIAL EVENTS, AND SUMMER CAMP: IN ADDITION TO ACADEMIC SUPPORT, ENRICHMENT AND STEM PROGRAMMING ALSO HELP SUPPORT STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND GOALS. IN JULY 2015, UC STUDENTS COULD BE FOUND ALL OVER LOS ANGELES EXPLORING, LEARNING, AND HAVING FUN TOGETHER. URBAN COMPASS HOSTS ITS OWN 4-WEEK SUMMER CAMP FOR STUDENTS IN 1ST-5TH GRADE IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE ACADEMIC GAP THAT OFTEN OCCURS DURING THESE MONTHS. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES: MORNING ACADEMIC SUPPORT, DAILY JOURNALS, SUMMER READING PROGRAM, MATH CHALLENGE, ARTS AND CRAFTS, AND FUN ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS. THROUGH OUR LASTING PARTNERSHIP WITH FALCONS YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES, DAILY SNACKS AND A HOT LUNCH WERE PROVIDED FOR EACH CHILD, A WONDERFUL NEW COMPONENT APPRECIATED BY PARENTS. SUMMER PROGRAMMING FACTORED IN STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTS AND GRADES FROM THE PRIOR SCHOOL YEAR IN ORDER TO CONTINUE MEETING THE ACADEMIC NEEDS OF PARTICIPANTS. THE CONTINUED EMPHASIS ON READING ALSO HELPED STUDENTS AS THEY EARNED FUN INCENTIVES AND PRIZES FOR EACH COMPLETED BOOK AND BOOK REPORT SUBMITTED DURING OUR "ROAD TO READING" SUMMER CHALLENGE. SUMMER TRIPS INCLUDED: THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, LACMA, LA BREA TAR PITS, CA SCIENCE CENTER, MUSEUM OF FLYING, RINGLING BROTHERS CIRCUS AT THE STAPLES CENTER, WATTS TOWERS, BOB BAKER MARIONETTE SHOW, BUCCANEER BAY WATER PARK, PACIFIC PARK AT THE SANTA MONICA PIER, COMPTON JR. POSSE RANCH, GRIFFITH PARK, SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN, AND OUR FIRST ANNUAL FAMILY BEACH DAY IN MANHATTAN BEACH. STUDENTS ALSO ENJOYED AMAZING ACADEMIC AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS WITH MAD SCIENCE, LULA WASHINGTON DANCE COMPANY, MUSE/IQUE, BITTER ROOT POTTERY, BUBBLEMANIA, AND REPTACULAR ANIMALS! OUR NEW SUMMER FIT ACADEMIC WORKBOOKS ALSO HELPED KIDS STAY ACADEMICALLY ENGAGED AND READY FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.CLOSE PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL UNIVERSITIES SUCH AS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, USC, AND WEST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE, HAVE NOT ONLY ASSISTED WITH COLLEGE VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT BUT ALSO NUMEROUS COLLEGE CAMPUS VISITS FOR STUDENTS. THESE OPPORTUNITIES HAVE HELPED WITH STUDENTS VISUALIZING THEMSELVES ACHIEVING COLLEGE SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE. IN FACT, DURING THE 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR, OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS VISITED 4 COLLEGES; SOME ALONG WITH THEIR FAMILIES TO HELP SUPPORT FAMILY GOALS OF COLLEGE ATTAINMENT. WE ALSO CONTINUE TO BRING SITE-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS, INCLUDING STEM PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE NUTS ABOUT SCIENCE PROGRAM, WHICH TEACHES SCIENCE CONCEPTS THROUGH HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTS AND ACTIVITIES. A NEW MUSIC PARTNERSHIP WAS FORMED WITH MUSE/IQUE AND THEIR KIDS/IQUE! PROGRAM. THESE INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS HELP KIDS BUILD A SENSE OF WONDER, EXCITEMENT, AND A FEELING OF ENTITLEMENT TO MUSIC OF VARIOUS GENRES. THE GANG ALTERNATIVES PROGRAM, A GANG PREVENTION PROGRAM, ALSO FACILITATED MONTHLY SESSIONS FOR OUR YOUTH TO HELP THEM MAKE POSITIVE DECISIONS AND COMBAT THE NEGATIVE INFLUENCES IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. URBAN COMPASS WAS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE KIDS COOK WITH HEART PROGRAM EACH WEEK. STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THEIR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES WHILE MAKING SOME DELICIOUS MEALS USING A VARIETY OF HANDS-ON, HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES. KIDS WERE EXCITED TO GO HOME AND SHARE THEIR RECIPES WITH THEIR FAMILIES. DUE TO ITS POPULARITY AND SUCCESS, AN EXTENSION PROGRAM WAS ALSO PLANNED FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR.TO HELP ADDRESS THE MULTIPLE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES, WE HAVE WORKED HARD TO SECURE QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL AGENCIES. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: THE URBAN COMPASS GUILD "ADOPTED" ALL FAMILIES DURING CHRISTMAS AND PROVIDED THEM WITH GIFTS, A HOLIDAY FOOD BASKET, AND KEY HOUSEHOLD ITEMS; LAPD CHIEF CHARLIE BECK SELECTED URBAN COMPASS TO BENEFIT FROM HIS HOLIDAY GIFT PROGRAM. WE ALSO LAUNCHED A MONTHLY "CODE 4 CLUB" WITH LAPD WHEREBY LOCAL POLICE OFFICERS TEACH STUDENTS IMPORTANT SAFETY LESSONS, FOSTER POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS, AND PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PARENT ENGAGEMENT: IN FEBRUARY 2016, UC FAMILIES JOINED THE FAMILY UNIVERSITY DAY PROGRAM AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LOS ANGELES, WHERE THEY ATTENDED WORKSHOPS ON THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS, TOURED THE CAMPUS, AND HEARD FROM FACULTY AND CURRENT STUDENTS. URBAN COMPASS ALSO HOSTS ITS OWN PARENT WORKSHOPS TO INSTRUCT PARENTS ON HOW TO PROPERLY READ THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOL REPORT CARD IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET THEIR CHILD'S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, AS WELL AS HAVE AN INFORMED CONVERSATION WITH THEIR TEACHERS. WE SHARE DATA ON STUDENT ATTENDANCE, PROGRAM SUCCESSES, AND CELEBRATED PARENTS FOR THEIR CHILD'S IMPROVEMENT IN CORE AREAS. URBAN COMPASS HAS WORKED HARD TO CREATE A SUPPORTIVE CULTURE OF LEARNING FOR OUR PARENTS. SPECIAL FAMILY FIELD TRIPS, A FAMILY NEWSLETTER, UC FAMILY REWARDS PROGRAM, AND VERY INVOLVED PARENT (VIP) INITIATIVES WERE LAUNCHED TO ENCOURAGE PARENTS AND FAMILIES TO BECOME ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN URBAN COMPASS AND AT THEIR SCHOOL SITE. BY VOLUNTEERING AND CONSISTENT ATTENDANCE AT MEETINGS AND EVENTS, MORE ENGAGED PARENTS SEND A POWERFUL MESSAGE TO STUDENTS. URBAN COMPASS WAS ALSO PLEASED TO INTRODUCE THE 1ST ANNUAL UC FAMILY ACHIEVEMENT BRUNCH FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO CELEBRATE THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS AND IMPROVEMENT TOGETHER! AT THIS EVENT, WE RECOGNIZE OUR FAMILIES FOR THEIR HARD WORK, PARTICIPATION, IMPROVEMENT, AND ACHIEVEMENT IN ACADEMICS, ATTENDANCE, AND MORE!
