Maternal health initiative in tanzania:the maternal health project is a joint effort between the tanzanian government, world lung foundation (wlf) as implementers, and bloomberg philanthropies, which has funded this effort for the past four years.the model being implemented in tanzania takes a comprehensive approach - it has contributed bricks and mortar to build and renovate facilities to enable adequate infrastructure at rural health centers; it continues to train non-doctor health workers to learn how to do surgeries and carry out complicated deliveries; and works closely with the government to see to it that there are adequate and appropriate tools for patient care. The result is that life-saving skills are available at local health centers in rural regions.phase one results to date, the project has upgraded or constructed 10 maternity wards, five laboratories, 11 operating theatres, and 20 staff houses-some of which are duplexes capable of holding two families. The project has also trained more than 50 amos in comprehensive emergency obstetric care, including c-sections and nurse midwives in anesthesia needed for these interventions.phase two - the way forward having successfully accomplished the goals of phase one, the project has now moved on to phase two: eliminating gaps in service delivery. Wlf is working with the government to augment the program with additional trained staff, ideally at least two amos and two nurse midwives per center.
