Partnering with ifakara health institute:tanzania's infant and maternal mortality rates are among the world's highest. Sixty-seven deaths occur before age one, for every 1,000 live births, and there are 950 deaths from pregnancy-relatedcauses, per 100,000 live births, according to unicef. In isolated rural regions, the cause is often lack of obstetrical care, including emergency surgery for obstructed labor. Lack of transportation, long distances, roads that flood during rainy season, and travel costs often make it impossible to reach district hospitals.in response to the situation in rural tanzania, wlf made grants,using funds provided by bloomberg philanthropies, to the ifakara health institute. The funds have been used to upgrade rural health care by training workers, renovating obstetrics facilities, building new operating theaters fully equipped with surgical equipment, andgenerating reliable supplies of electricity and clean water. Wlf has also built desperately needed staff housing to help draw physicians and nurses to distant villages, and retain them.in addition, wlf supported a three-month anesthesia training program at maweni hospital, new laboratories at health centers in mwaya and mtimbira, and basic emergency care in the singidaregion (through an ifakara subgrant to the benjamin mkapa hiv foundation). Periodic site visits and a commitment to quality assurance are integral to the initiative, which is considered a modelfor maternal care throughout tanzania.
