To reach women of all ages in the rochester community with information about breast cancer awareness and to provide support to newly diagnosed women with breast cancer. To accomplish this, join the journey sponsors projects and programs to provide community education/outreach and direct patient support.

THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO WOMEN UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY AT THE MAYO CLINIC, ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA. GIFT CARDS FOR FUEL AND GROCERIES ARE GIVEN TO THOSE IN NEED BY CHEMOTHERAPY NURSES WHILE RECEIVING TREATMENT. IN ADDITION, FUNDS WERE DONATED TO THE CHEMO UNIT TO PROVIDE POPSICLES, WHICH HELP PREVENT MOUTH SORES FOR CHEMO PATIENTS, AND UDDER CREAM, A LOTION TO HELP WITH DRY SKIN. IN 2010, THIS PROGRAM ASSISTED APPROXIMATELY 1,400 PATIENTS STRUGGLING TO COPE WITH DAILY EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH LONG TERM MEDICAL CARE.

SINCE 2006 JOIN THE JOURNEY HAS PROVIDED FUNDING FOR THE WOMEN'S CANCER PROGRAM FALL EDUCATIONAL EVENT HELD AT THE MAYO CLINIC. THE EVENT TARGETS WOMEN DEALING WITH BREAST OR GYNECOLOGIC CANCER. THIS ONE DAY EVENT PROVIDES EXPERT PRESENTATIONS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS: NEW CANCER RESEARCH; ADJUVANT THERAPY; CHEMOPREVENTION; AND OTHER AREAS. THE EVENT ATTRACTS 200-250 PARTICIPANTS ANNUALLY. INCLUDING WITHIN THIS FUNDING, JOIN THE JOURNEY PROVIDED FUNDING FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE STRENGTHENING/HEALING SERIES IN THE WOMEN'S CANCER CENTER AT MAYO CLINIC. THIS PROGRAM SERVED APPROXIMATELY 500 PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN 2010.

JOIN THE JOURNEY HAS DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 8,000 BOOKS TO DATE. MANY BOOK RECIPIENTS HAVE EXPRESSED A FEELING OF EMPOWERMENT WITH THE EASY TO READ INFORMATION ON BREAST AND GYNECOLOGIC CANCER DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, RECOVERY, RECURRENCE AND END OF LIFE ISSUES. JOIN THE JOURNEY / HAWTHORNE HEALTH FAIR PROGRAM: EVERY FALL WE SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE HAWTHORNE HEALTH CLINIC. THIS ANNUAL EVENT REACHES WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO SPEAK ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. THESE WOMEN LEARN ABOUT BREAST HEALTH AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINE SELF EXAMS AND ANNUAL MAMMOGRAMS. IN 2010, APPROXIMATELY 1,000 WOMEN WERE ASSISTED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. PINK RIBBON MENTORSHIP PROGRAM: THIS IS A VOLUNTEER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES ON AND OFF SITE EMOTIONAL, INFORMATIONAL, AND EXPERIENTIAL SUPPORT TO WOMEN UNDERGOING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT. ON SITE MENTORS ARE AVAILABLE TO VISIT WITH PATIENTS AFTER BREAST CANCER SURGERY AND IN THE CHEMOTHERAPY SUITE WHILE PATIENTS ARE RECEIVING TREATMENT. TELEPHONE, EMAIL AND OFF SITE FACE TO FACE VISITS ARE ALSO PART OF THE MENTORSHIP SERVICES. OVER 3,000 WOMEN WERE SERVED BY OVER 40 MENTORS IN 2010, VOLUNTEERING OVER 2,600 HOURS. MAKING WAVES PROGRAM: THIS IS A FLOATING SUPPORT GROUP OF JOIN THE JOURNEY. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS WHO ENGAGE IN REPETITIVE ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS PADDLING, DEVELOP A MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH. EQUIPPED WITH THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF DRAGON BOATING, A GROUP OF ENTHUSIASTIC BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND SUPPORTERS PADDLE EVERY WEDNESDAY EVENING IN THE SUMMER ON SILVER LAKE IN ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA AND HOLD QUARTERLY SOCIAL EVENTS. THE TEAM CONTINUES TO MEET IN THE WINTER MONTHS WORKING ON STRETCHING AND STRENGTH TRAINING. NEARLY 170 PARTICIPANTS/MEMBERS WERE INVOLVED IN THIS PROGRAM IN 2010. RESULTS ARE CURRENTLY BEING EVALUATED AND WRITTEN UP. FIBER ARTS GUILD CHEMO CAP PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS DEALING WITH THE DIAGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER. THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN JOIN THE JOURNEY AND THE FIBER ARTS GUILD MEETS THE COMFORT NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE LOST THEIR HAIR DO TO TREATEMENT. THE FIBER ARTS GUILD HAS AS A NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS WHO CROCHET SOFT COTTON CAPS FOR CANCER PATIENTS. JOIN THE JOURNEY PROVIDES FUNDING FOR PURCHASING THE YARN THESE CAPS ARE MADE OF. THESE CAPS ARE DISTRIBUTED TO LOCATIONS ALL ACROSS THE MAYO CLINIC CAMPUS AND ARE PROVIDED TO INDIVIDUALS FREE OF CHARGE. MAYO CLINIC BREAST SNACK PROGRAM: THE PROGRAM PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS DEALING WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER. THIS PROGRAM MEETS THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE HAD EARLY MORNING FASTING LAB TESTING. MANY PATIENTS GO ON TO HAVE CONSECUTIVE CLINIC APPOINTEMENTS WITHOUT AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE BREAKFAST AND IN SOME INSTANCES EVEN LUNCH. FUNDING PROVIDES CLINICAL STAFF TO DISTRIBUTE GRANOLA BARS, CRACKERS AND BOTTLED WATER TO IDENTIFIED PATIENTS TO EASE THEIR HUNGER PAINS.

MANY BOOK RECIPIENTS HAVE EXPRESSED A FEELING OF EMPOWERMENT WITH THE EASY TO READ INFORMATION ON BREAST AND GYNECOLOGIC CANCER DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, RECOVERY, RECURRENCE AND END OF LIFE ISSUES. JOIN THE JOURNEY / HAWTHORNE HEALTH FAIR PROGRAM: EVERY FALL WE SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE HAWTHORNE HEALTH CLINIC. THIS ANNUAL EVENT REACHES WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO SPEAK ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. THESE WOMEN LEARN ABOUT BREAST HEALTH AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINE SELF EXAMS AND ANNUAL MAMMOGRAMS. IN 2010, APPROXIMATELY 1,000 WOMEN WERE ASSISTED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. PINK RIBBON MENTORSHIP PROGRAM: THIS IS A VOLUNTEER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES ON AND OFF SITE EMOTIONAL, INFORMATIONAL, AND EXPERIENTIAL SUPPORT TO WOMEN UNDERGOING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT. ON SITE MENTORS ARE AVAILABLE TO VISIT WITH PATIENTS AFTER BREAST CANCER SURGERY AND IN THE CHEMOTHERAPY SUITE WHILE PATIENTS ARE RECEIVING TREATMENT. TELEPHONE, EMAIL AND OFF SITE FACE TO FACE VISITS ARE ALSO PART OF THE MENTORSHIP SERVICES. OVER 3,000 WOMEN WERE SERVED BY OVER 40 MENTORS IN 2010, VOLUNTEERING OVER 2,600 HOURS. MAKING WAVES PROGRAM: THIS IS A FLOATING SUPPORT GROUP OF JOIN THE JOURNEY. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS WHO ENGAGE IN REPETITIVE ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS PADDLING, DEVELOP A MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH. EQUIPPED WITH THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF DRAGON BOATING, A GROUP OF ENTHUSIASTIC BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND SUPPORTERS PADDLE EVERY WEDNESDAY EVENING IN THE SUMMER ON SILVER LAKE IN ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA AND HOLD QUARTERLY SOCIAL EVENTS.
