| IRS990/Desc | 0 | RESEARCH/SCIENCE: THE PROGRAMMATIC GOALS OF THE SCIENCE/RESEARCH PROGRAM STRIVE TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY AUTISM TODAY, AS WELL AS IMPROVE THEIR FUTURE BY ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. THE RESEARCH FOCUSES ON DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, SERVICE DELIVERY AND PREVENTION. IN 2013, AUTISM SPEAKS' HISTORIC AUTISM SPEAKS TEN THOUSAND GENOMES PROGRAM (AUT10K) PUBLISHED ITS INAUGURAL STUDY IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HUMAN GENETICS. THE STUDY FOCUSED ON THE WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING OF 32 FAMILIES AND IDENTIFIED AUTISM-LIKE GENE CHANGES IN HALF OF THEM. THE STUDY ALSO IDENTIFIED SEVERAL NEW AUTISM-LINKED GENES AND PROVIDED IMPORTANT MEDICAL INSIGHTS FOR THE PARTICIPATING FAMILIES. AUT10K CONTINUES ITS RAPID PROGRESS TOWARD THE WHOLE-GENOME SEQUENCING OF 10,000 INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF VARIOUS AUTISM SUBSETS AND INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENTS. THE AUTISM SPEAKS CO-SPONSORED THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AUTISM. THE GENEVA MEETING REPRESENTED THE FIRST STEP IN ENACTING THE WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION ON AUTISM. IN ADDITION, AUTISM SPEAKS LAUNCHED ITS EARLY ACCESS TO CARE INITIATIVE TO REDUCE THE AVERAGE AGE OF AUTISM DIAGNOSIS AND INCREASE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY EARLY INTERVENTION IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. MAJOR OUTREACH PROJECTS INCLUDED COLLABORATIONS WITH THE NATIONAL BLACK CHURCHES INITIATIVE AND THE NEW YORK CITY KOREAN COMMUNITY. TAKING PLACE IN NEW YORK CITY, AUTISM SPEAKS HOSTED ITS INAUGURAL AUTISM INVESTMENT CONFERENCE. THE EVENT DREW MORE THAN A HUNDRED ENTREPRENEURS, INVESTORS, BUSINESS EXECUTIVES AND RESEARCHERS FOR THE WORLD'S FIRST CONFERENCE ON INVESTMENT AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF AUTISM SERVICES AND THERAPIES. AUTISM SPEAKS ALSO HELPED OPEN A NEW FIELD OF RESEARCH WITH THE FIRST LARGE STUDY ON THE ROLE OF EPIGENETICS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTISM. IN THE GROUNDBREAKING STUDY, RESEARCHERS, FUNDED BY AUTISM SPEAKS, DOCUMENTED TELL-TALE EPIGENETIC PATTERNS BETWEEN IDENTICAL TWINS WHO DIFFER IN AUTISM TRAITS. IN 2013, AUTISM SPEAKS SPENT $14,800,000 IN GRANTS FOR NEW AND CONTINUING PROJECTS IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: SPECIAL PROJECTS ($5,030,782) ARE AUTISM SPEAKS-INITIATED PROJECTS AIMED AT ADDRESSING SPECIFIC NEEDS WITHIN THE AUTISM RESEARCH COMMUNITY. AUTISM SPEAKS STAFF WORKED IN CONJUNCTION WITH INVESTIGATORS TO DEVELOP PROJECTS THAT MAY INCLUDE: IMPROVEMENTS TO RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE, RAPID RESPONSES TO NEW AND HIGHLY VISIBLE PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES, OR FACILITATING COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN INVESTIGATORS TO ADDRESS COMPLEX RESEARCH ISSUES FROM A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE. IN 2013, TOPICS INCLUDED AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MONITORING NETWORK (ADDM), DETERMINING THE COST OF AUTISM, ANIMAL MODELS, PRECLINICAL AUTISM CONSORTIUM FOR THERAPEUTICS, DSM-5 (DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS, FIFTH EDITION) COMPARISONS AND PROJECTS AROUND EARLY INTERVENTION. TREATMENT, BASIC RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATION PROJECTS: AUTISM SPEAKS - AUTISM TREATMENT NETWORK ($2,449,005), BASIC & CLINICAL STUDIES ($3,360,285), GLOBAL AUTISM PUBLIC HEALTH (GAPH) ($300,000), SUZANNE AND BOB WRIGHT TRAILBLAZER ($100,000), AND TREATMENT STUDIES ($860,648). TRAINING GRANTS: MEIXNER TRANSLATIONAL POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS ($1,412,944), AND WEATHERSTONE PREDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS ($464,437). |
