THE STUDY'S FINDINGS INCLUDED THE ESTIMATED LIFETIME COST PER INDIVIDUAL TO BE $2.3 MILLION AND THE ESTIMATED ANNUAL COST TO SOCIETY WAS DETERMINED TO BE $137 BILLION IN THE UNITED STATES. AS ALSO PIONEERED THE TRANSLATION, CULTURAL ADAPTATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES IN ETHNIC AMERICAN COMMUNITIES INCLUDING A KOREAN-AMERICAN AND SERBIAN EDITION OF THE AS 100 DAY TOOL KIT.IN 2012, AS SPENT $14,031,088 IN GRANTS FOR NEW AND CONTINUING PROJECTS IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: SPECIAL PROJECTS ($2,924,986) ARE AUTISM SPEAKS-INITIATED PROJECTS AIMED AT ADDRESSING SPECIFIC NEEDS WITHIN THE AUTISM RESEARCH COMMUNITY. AS STAFF WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH INVESTIGATORS TO DEVELOP PROJECTS THAT MAY INCLUDE: IMPROVEMENTS TO RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE, RAPID RESPONSES TO NEW AND HIGHLY VISIBLE PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES, OR FACILITATING COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN INVESTIGATORS TO ADDRESS COMPLEX RESEARCH ISSUES FROM A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE. IN 2012, TOPICS INCLUDED AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MONITORING NETWORK (ADDM), DETERMINING THE COST OF AUTISM, ANIMAL MODELS, DSM-5 (DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS, FIFTH EDITION) COMPARISONS AND PROJECTS AROUND EARLY INTERVENTION.
