Activity 2
Awareness is a cornerstone of the as mission. In 2012, enormous strides were made to shine the light on autism from an award-winning ad council campaign, which received nearly $376 million in donated media time and space for the ads, and extensive media appearances to our website autismspeaks.org. Additionally, our retail partnerships, special events and programs like walk now for autism speaks, team up with autism speaks and autism speaks u all served to advance the awareness of autism throughout the nation and motivated individuals to act on behalf of their loved ones. Globally, as's "light it up blue" initiative kicked off world autism awareness day (waad) and autism awareness month on april 2 with nearly 3,000 structures in more than 600 cities, 45 countries and six continents illuminated in blue. As hosted the fifth annual world focus on autism bringing together more than 15 first spouses and heads of state in an unprecedented show of support to raise awareness of autism around the world and encourage collaboration among nations to improve services and provisions and share best practices. On december 12, the united nations general assembly (unga) unanimously passed a new resolution calling on governments to take action to improve access to long-term healthcare, education, training and intervention programs for persons with autism spectrum disorders (asd), developmental disorders (dd), and associated disabilities, at local, national and international levels. The resolution was drafted and tabled by the mission of bangladesh with the support of autism speaks and more than 70 co-sponsors.family services is committed to connecting and empowering individuals with autism and their families with resources to improve their quality of life today and into the future. Through the family services community and chapter grant programs, a total of $450,000 was awarded to organizations to fund programs for individuals with autism in the areas of education, recreation and community activities, and young adult and adult services. Through the baker summer camp grant program as also awarded $160,000 in scholarship funds allowing financially disadvantaged children and young adults with autism to attend camp. The autismcares program provided approximately $215,000 in funding to financially disadvantaged families in crisis situations, including $120,000 to victims of hurricane sandy. Tool kits for families launched in 2012 included a challenging behaviors tool kit and a housing and residential supports tool kit. In 2012, a total of over 60,000 as tool kits were downloaded by families including the 100 day kit for newly diagnosed families and the transition tool kit for young adults on the spectrum, and nearly 3,500 hard copies were mailed out free of charge. For government relations/advocacy, as helped pass legislation in alaska, delaware, and michigan to ensure greater access to care via meaningful health insurance coverage for autism treatments. As also helped secure legislation to expand existing coverage in louisiana (expanding the covered age range and adding the small group market), rhode island (creating needed licensure), vermont (raising the age limit for coverage for age 6 to 21), and west virginia (generally improving existing mandate). The organization met with numerous self-funded companies in an effort to convince them to voluntarily add autism benefits to their health plans, including united technologies corporation, darden, and most notably the u.s. Office of personnel management, which for the first time permitted plans in the federal employee health benefits program to include aba benefits. As put on numerous workshops around the country helping families and treatment providers understand how to navigate insurance reimbursement under our new laws, including a national workshop in conjunction with the association of professional behavior analysts annual conference. As hosted our 7th annual autism law summit, in washington, d.c.
