“Seeking to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the hispanic immigrants in wayne county and surrounding areas.”
“Transportation and mercy ministry services: assisted with transportation needs of hispanic immigrants and accompanied them to legal and medical visits for translation and facilitation, as well as to school meetings. Provided financial relief for medical expenses. This served about 60 - 70 people per month. Open arms started a partnership with a local company that employs more than 50% of hispanics. We served as a liaison between the company leadership and the hispanic employees, helping them with their material needs, using a network to make their lives easier, and to have access to answers and solutions for all their necessities.”
“Outreach/evangelism, including hispanic retreat & marriage encounter: provided counseling and spiritual direction /community building enrichment activities. Approximately 146 people attended the hispanic retreat and an additional 14 couples participated in the marriage reunion. Our partnership with a bi-lingual congregation is helping continued growth, numerically and spiritually, where people of different languages and ethnicities enthusiastically worship and serve god together.”
“Other program services: community relationship building, education, and advocacy. Open arms is working in partnership with various organizations to help the hispanic community in a number of different areas. We are pleased to see that the chief of police and the mayor of a local city, have developed an open-door policy, helping us to have a good working relationship with officials in this city, where a good number of hispanics are living. In addition, we are working with other non-profits like people to people, mcc connections, and o'huddle (a tutoring program for students).”
“Discipleship and sunday morning services at various local congregations: prepared sunday religious services and educational materials to instruct anglo communities about the hardship of hispanics in immigration, labor and other topics as well as the importance of their labor in the food chain of this country. Highlight the opportunities for hispanic communities immigrants in a multi-cultural church context. In this category, it is difficult to estimate numbers of attendees, because the church sizes vary significantly.”
