| In 2016-2017 Phoenix Theatre Ensemble met and exceeded its artistic goals, presenting 22 performances of Bertolt Brechts political masterpiece, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Top 10 of 2016 by New York Theatre Guide; top grossing play in PTEs 14-year history) and seen by student groups from Brooklyn College, Hunter College, The New School, and City College; and 16 performances of Joe Ortons comedy Entertaining Mr. Sloane (Top Ten of 2017 by Theatrescene) each which included post-performance audience/artist discussions. PTE presented a late night series of music and comedy (Filibusted) and a Fall short play festival. PTE continued its program of developing new works through workshops and staged readings by emerging playwrights including The Cult Play by Topher Cusumano and Back Channel by Joseph Vitale. PTE also initiated an open free monthly program, Working Titles focusing on the development of new works (theatre and web-based programs) by millennial writers. PTE provided a reading series of important but rarely performed plays, The Infernal Machine and The Knights of the Roundtable, by French poet, film maker, and playwright Jean Cocteau. These readings were supported by the Florence Gould Foundation. Phoenix Theatre Ensemble's Community-Board-#3-endorsed, In Flight Arts-in-Education program serves East Side Community High School, (ESCHS) a 6th - 12th grade secondary Title 1 New York City Public School. Phoenix teaching artists provide in-school, school-day theatre studios 4 days a week for the entire academic year. Each semester ends with a student production in an Off Broadway venue with professional design elements and technical support for invited free-of-charge audience composed family, peers, faculty and PTE board members and artists. This program provides a remarkable 6000+ student contact hours per year. Studios are up to 40 students x 4 hours per week = 160 student hours/week x 40 weeks =6,400 for just the studios. Literature to Life averages 20 students per class x 10 classes = 200 student contact hours. In the words of Vice Principal Karla Gonzales-Montoya We are certain that the work of the in-flight program at ESCHS helps to increase our students reading abilities / levels, and more importantly create a passion and excitement for learning as they continue to discover themselves and their potential through this course in performing arts. Phoenix Theatre Ensemble remains dedicated to building a diverse audience and making theatre accessible and available to all people. To ensure that this is possible, Phoenix offers a Pay-What-You-Can ticket to all productions, donates free tickets to High Five (for teens), to seniors, and groups from YAI (which provides services to people of all ages with developmental and learning disabilities and their families) and New Alternatives for Children. In addition, College and school groups receive discounted tickets. To enhance the audiences experience with our productions, Phoenix conducts post show discussions with the artists.Phoenix met its goal to serve its constituent audience and provide outreach programs and access to our productions and program to children, youth, seniors, differently abled, and economically challenged people of our community. Phoenix reached over 3,600 individuals with its programs and presentations. | $124,550 | - |
