Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Boston after school & beyond, inc. Is a public private partnership that pursues a unified after-school and summer learning system that promotes stakeholder alignment, a focus on results, and access to learning opportunities, particularly for high-need students.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Boston youth environmental network (byen)- byen mobilizes environmental agencies in collaboration with the boston public schools in order to advance career opportunities for high school students and to enhance environmental education for k-8 students in the boston public schools. Byen pilots system-building efforts to activate learning in hands-on ways and inform policy development with a variety of public and private partners.
Activity 3
Boston youth sports initiative (bysi) - bysi seeks to leverage a network of programs, intermediaries, and funders to increase youth access to sports-based youth development opportunities. Specifically, bysi supports targeted system building efforts to increase the capacity of programs to provide quality opportunities, especially to underserved groups. With local funders, the boston centers for youth and families, and the boston public schools, bysi has leveraged an increase in opportunities for underserved youth through new middle school sports leagues, new girl-serving programs at community centers, and the first-ever citywide baseball league for 11 and 12 year-olds. Additionally, bysi contributed to the development and adoption of "sport-based youth development" quality standards.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL & BEYOND, INC. IS A PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP THAT PURSUES A WIDELY UNDERSTOOD AND UNIFIED AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER LEARNING SYSTEM THAT PROMOTES STAKEHOLDER ALIGNMENT, A FOCUS ON RESULTS, AND ACCESS TO LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, PARTICULARLY FOR HIGH-NEED STUDENTS.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0BOSTON NAVIGATOR - IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF BOSTON, BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL & BEYOND MANAGES THIS UNIFIED, SEARCHABLE DATABASE OF MORE THAN 1,700 AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS OFFERED BY MORE THAN 700 ORGANIZATIONS. NAVIGATOR PROVIDES INFORMATION ON PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH BETWEEN THE AGES OF 5 AND 24 DURING NON-SCHOOL HOURS, INCLUDING BEFORE SCHOOL, AFTER SCHOOL, WEEKENDS, SCHOOL VACATIONS AND THE SUMMER. THE DATABASE IS SEARCHABLE BY AGE, TYPE OF ACTIVITY, AND KEYWORD - WITHIN 1/4 MILE OF ANY ADDRESS. INFORMATION HOUSED IN THE DATABASE INFORMS FUNDERS AND POLICY-MAKERS ON PROGRAM SUPPLY AND GAPS IN SERVICES FOR YOUTH. VISITORS ARE INCREASING BY 4,000 EVERY YEAR, WITH 2011 ESTIMATED TO HAVE 18,000 VISITORS. CURRENTLY BOSTON NAVIGATOR EXPERIENCES 50-70 VISITORS EACH DAY.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1NATIONAL INITIATIVE - THE AGENCY PARTICIPATES IN THE COLLABORATIVE FOR BUILDING AFTER-SCHOOL SYSTEMS (CBASS), A PARTNERSHIP OF INTERMEDIARY ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO INCREASING THE AVAILABILITY OF QUALITY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING BY BUILDING CITY-WIDE AFTER-SCHOOL SYSTEMS. THE MISSION OF CBASS IS TO MAKE AFTER-SCHOOL PART OF THE SYSTEM OF ESSENTIAL SERVICES THAT SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUTH, AND TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF QUALITY AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE SYSTEMS NATIONWIDE. CBASS WAS FOUNDED IN 2006 WITH A GRANT FROM THE ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2BOSTON SUMMER LEARNING PROJECT - LAUNCHED BY THE BOSTON OPPORTUNITY AGENDA IN 2010, AND CO-MANAGED BY BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL & BEYOND AND THE BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THE SUMMER LEARNING PROJECT (SLP) SEEKS TO REVERSE SUMMER LEARNING LOSS FOR HIGH NEED STUDENTS THROUGH ALIGNED, RESULTS-FOCUSED SCHOOL-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT UP TO HALF OF THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP BETWEEN LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND THEIR HIGHER INCOME PEERS CAN BE EXPLAINED BY UNEQUAL ACCESS TO SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. IN THE FIRST SUMMER OF A TWO-YEAR DEMONSTRATION PROJECT, 232 STUDENTS FROM FIVE LOW-PERFORMING SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED WITH SEVEN COMMUNITY PARTNERS. ON AVERAGE, STUDENTS REALIZED SLIGHT GAINS IN MATH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND SIGNIFICANT GAINS IN SKILL ATTAINMENT (ENGAGEMENT IN LEARNING, COMMUNICATION, AND RELATIONS WITH ADULTS). LESSONS FROM THE FIRST SUMMER CONTRIBUTED TO THE DESIGN OF A MORE ROBUST PILOT IN THE SUMMER OF 2011 WITH NEARLY 1500 STUDENTS, MORE THAN 30 SCHOOLS, AND 15 COMMUNITY PARTNERS. BOSTON IS NOW PART OF A NATIONAL SIX-CITY DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FUNDED BY THE WALLACE FOUNDATION. THE SUMMER LEARNING PROJECT IS INFORMING SYSTEM-WIDE APPROACHES TO EXPANDING LEARNING THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3TEEN INITIATIVE - THE TEEN INITIATIVE ORGANIZES BOSTON'S LEADING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS INTO NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED NETWORKS - EAST BOSTON YOUTH TASK FORCE, GOTCHA (DORCHESTER), JAMAICA PLAIN UNIDOS/UNITED, LOWER ROXBURY YOUTH COLLABORATIVE, AND BOSTON YOUTH SERVICE NETWORK (CITYWIDE). A COLLABORATION OF BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL & BEYOND, THE CITY OF BOSTON, MORE THAN 60 PROGRAM PROVIDERS, THE BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS COLLABORATE TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT PROGRAM MODELS THAT SERVE THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF TEENAGERS IN COMMUNITY-BASED AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS, USING THE COMMUNITY AS THE CLASSROOM.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description4SCHOOL-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS - WITH AN TWO-YEAR GRANT TO ORCHARD GARDENS K-8 SCHOOL, BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL & BEYOND IS WORKING TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOP OF STUDENT-CENTERED, RESULTS-FOCUSED, STANDARDS-ALIGNED SCHOOL-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.
