“The irwin and florence rosten foundation (dba: maps media insitute)is committed to providing a rigorous, hands-on media arts program for 8th - 12th grade students that is designed to instill a lifelong passion for learning and to equip students with the skills and confidence for academic, social and professional success.”

“Founded in 2004, the maps media institute empowers high school students through creativity, communication skills, confidence and inspiration. Maps integrates science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (steam) concepts within a media arts and service learning curriculum. Our goal is to inspire and prepare montana's rural, underserved, 8th - 12th grade students to succeed in the 21st century. Our curriculum includes and combines filmmaking, graphic design, music production, computer science, college and career readiness, entrepreneurship and community service. We teach students how to use technology, but even more importantly, maps teaches students how to communicate effectively. Through hands-on instruction, students are introduced to the creative processes of imagination and inspiration and taught how to apply these skills for future success. Maps is a state registered local education agency (lea) and serves five school districts in rural ravalli county in western montana. 25% of our enrollment is home-schooled. Afterschool classes in each discipline run for 2 hours, 2 days per week, monday - friday, for 32 consecutive weeks. Summer program runs for 6 consecutive weeks, with each discipline running for a one week intensive, mon - fri, noon - 4pm. Maps curriculum meets 96% of montana's reading standards and 93% of montana's standards for mathematical practice as established by montana office of public instruction. Maps meets 92% of iste standards (international society for technology in education). The average maps students completes 128 class hours per year (1 credit high school classes range from 120 - 140 hrs). In 2018, maps - ravalli county served 93 students. All of maps programming is completely free-of-charge.”

“The maps media lab is the statewide outreach program of the maps media institute. Digital literacy is an essential aspect of today's global society, but many montana communities have little or no access to the tools necessary to support and encourage these skills. Rural montana schools, especially, have limited access to digital media arts. Through the maps media lab, artist-instructors travel to rural and reservation towns to teach filmmaking, graphic design, technology, and music production, using our established curricula with state-of-the-art equipment. Students emerge with new/improved technical skills, media content for student portfolios and deepened engagement with their peers and communities. Students also learn how to distribute and showcase their work to both their own communities and to the general public while learning how to speak to audiences about their production experience. Maps media lab projects directly engage students on important issues in their own communities. We partner with local organizations and school districts to curate intentional media projects that address issues affecting the local community, or that illuminate an important community service. Browning rising voices, blackfeet indian reservation: currently in post- production, maps conducted 4 production workshops with browning high school students to document this spoken word/creative expression project. “2018 accomplishments: in addition to maps - ravalli county 32 week afterschool program and 4 week summer program and 10 week maps - lake county program on the flathead indian reservation, other primary accomplishment include: student awards: maps students won the "best of", "honorable mention- and "heart awards" from the 41 fresh northwest film festival. 2018 montana indian education for all conference: maps presented the maps media lab program with highlighted outtakes from projects on the flathead, blackfeet and harlem (near fort belknap) reservation. 2018 montana arts integration conference: maps is a key presenter at this june conference for state arts education leaders. Mt gear up partnership: 2018 marked the 5th year of maps partnering with gear up montana. Outreach summer workshops tool place on both the flathead and blackfeet reservations in june. The maps media lab is maps statewide educational outreach program designed to bring specific community workshops to rural and reservation communities. 2018 projects included: 1.harlem school district (near fort belknap indian reservation): maps hosted a three day a technical capacity-building workshop with harlem staff/students. 2.holter museum art for survival: maps facilitated a five month film project with the staff/students at the holter museum art 4 survival after school program. 3.poetry out loud is a national program encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. Maps is producing a video for statewide recruitment. Two advanced design/tech students led the project.”
