Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Pt VI, Line 2

MICHELLE WALLIS, PAUL CRUZ, Ph.D. AND GINA HINOJOSA ARE EMPLOYED BY AISD. DREW SCHEBERLE IS AN EMPLOYEE OF THE GREATER AUSTIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Pt VI, Line 6

The greater austin chamber of commerce and austin independent school district are members of austin partners in education.

Pt VI, Line 7A

The greater austin chamber of commerce and austin independent school district approve election of directors to the board.

Pt VI, Line 7B

The greater austin chamber of commerce and austin independent school district have the authority to approve certain major decisions like sale of a large percentage of the assets.

Pt VI, Line 11B

The board of directors of austin partners in education (apie) will review and approve the annual form 990 prior to filing with the irs.

Pt VI, Line 12C

The governing body is provided a copy of the policy and is instructed to disclose any potential conflict to the finance manager. Each member of the board of directors signs the policy statement and discloses any potential conflicts. Any conflicts are reviewed by the board, and any resulting restriction voted on by members present at the meeting, excluding the member(s) concerned in the potential conflict.

Pt VI, Line 15A

In a previous base year, the hr committee reviewed salaries of aisd administrators and used that as a guide for setting compensation for the executive director. The committee then submitted the proposed salary to administaff (now insperity), who issued a "letter of reasonableness" supporting the amount. The board chair and the board member representing aisd then signed a letter documenting the determined salary amount. Each year since, the board interviews key personnel and compares with goals. Raises are determined based on the results of the evaluation in concert with consideration of the aisd fiscal environment and industry trends.

Pt VI, Line 19

The organizational documents and tax returns are available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0AUSTIN PARTNERS IN EDUCATION (APIE) IMPROVES STUDENT OUTCOMES BY RECRUITING, TRAINING, AND PLACING A CRITICAL MASS OF MORE THAN 1,400 VOLUNTEERS A WEEK INTO AUSTIN I.S.D. AS TUTORS AND MENTORS. FOUNDED IN 1983 BY THE PARTNERS, THE GREATER AUSTIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, AND THE AUSTIN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS AUSTIN'S ADOPT-A-SCHOOL PROGRAM, APIE WAS ESTABLISHED AS A NONPROFIT ASSOCIATION IN 2004. GACC AND AISD RETAIN CERTAIN GOVERNANCE POWERS. APIE FOSTERS EFFECTIVE VOLUNTEER-DRIVEN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS THAT SUPPORT AND ENRICH STUDENT LEARNING AND SUCCESS THROUGH THE PROGRAMS LISTED BELOW. IN THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR, APIE CLASSROOM COACHING AND MENTORING PROGRAMS LEVERAGED 1,400 VOLUNTEERS INTO AISD SCHOOLS, CONTRIBUTING IN EXCESS OF 41,650 HOURS OF ACADEMIC AND MENTORING SUPPORT BENEFITING 3,050 STUDENTS. ADDITIONALY, FACILITATED BY APIE ADOPT-A-SCHOOL, THE AUSTIN COMMUNITY PROVIDED OVER 6,175 VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE OVER 100 AISD SCHOOLS. CLASSROOM COACHING THIS UNIQUE, CLASSROOM-BASED, COMMUNITY DRIVEN COACHING MODEL IS EFFECTIVE IN BOOSTING STUDENT ACADEMIC OUTCOMES AND FOSTERING SELF-CONFIDENCE AND PERSONAL GROWTH AT KEY EDUCATION INFLECTION POINTS. BY LEVERAGING COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND SUPPORTING THE CLASS CURRICULUM, IT CAN SCALE TO SERVE ALL STUDENTS IN A CLASS. ENTIRE CLASSES ARE DIVIDED INTO SMALL INTERACTIVE GROUPS OF 2-3 STUDENTS PER COACH EACH WEEK IN 45-MINUTE SESSIONS. COACHES PROVIDE ACADEMIC MENTORING, WHILE PROVIDING GUIDED PRACTICE WITH WEEKLY ACADEMIC TOPICS AND ASSIGNMENTS. COACHES RECEIVE A CURRICULUM NOTEBOOK DURING A TWO HOUR VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION TRAINING SEMINAR, AND WEEKLY CURRICULUM NOTES AND CLASS REMINDERS. COACHES LEAD STUDENTS THROUGH THE MATERIAL, ALSO UTILIZING THE EXPERTISE OF THE TEACHER WHO MOVES AMONG THE COACHING GROUPS ANSWERING INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS. THE CLASSROOM COACHING PROGRAMS INCLUDE: -2ND GRADE READING (IN ENGLISH, AND IN SPANISH AS THE COMPANEROS EN LECTURA PROGRAM) DURING THIS GRADE, STUDENTS MAKE THE IMPORTANT TRANSITION FROM LEARNING TO READ TO READING TO LEARN. STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT READING AT A MODERATE SKILL LEVEL BY THIRD GRADE FALL BEHIND AND FREQUENTLY NEVER CATCH UP. ACADEMIC INTERVENTION IN 2ND GRADE READING BOLSTERS THE FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE SUCCESS. BECAUSE AISD CLASSROOMS INCLUDE A LARGE POPULATION OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS(ELLS), COMPANEROS EN LECTURA TEACHES SPANISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS TO READ IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE, ESTABLISHING FLUENCY AND READING SKILLS THAT CAN THEN PROVIDE A BRIDGE TO READING IN ENGLISH. -6TH GRADE READING DURING MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE READING VOLUME AND COMPREHENSION REQUIREMENTS INCREASE DRAMATICALLY, AS DO RELATIONSHIP CHANGES. AT THIS STAGE, STUDENTS ARE CONSIDERING WHETHER TO STAY IN SCHOOL BASED ON THEIR ACADEMIC SUCCESS, PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, AND THEIR PERCEPTION OF THEIR OWN APTITUDE. APIE PROVIDES 6TH GRADE READING IN CLASSROOM COACHING PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT BASIC READING SKILLS IN ORDER TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE IMPORTANT TRANSITION FROM LANGUAGE ARTS TO LITERATURE STUDIES. READING GROUPS WORK ON COMPREHENSION AND HIGHER REASONING SKILLS BY DISCUSSING READINGS THAT BRING UP ISSUES THAT ARE CENTRAL TO THEIR WORLD AND RELATIONSHIPS. STUDENTS ARE LEVEL- GROUPED AND WORK AT THEIR OWN PACE. GROUPS RANGE FROM STRUGGLING READERS WHO FOCUS ON BUILDING FLUENCY AND VOCABULARY TO STUDENTS READING ABOVE GRADE LEVEL WHO WORK WITH MORE ADVANCED TEXTS. -8TH GRADE MATH APIE HELPS STUDENTS MASTER 8TH GRADE MATH TO ENSURE SUCCESS IN ALGEBRA IN 9TH GRADE. A 2008 ACT STUDY SHOWS THAT MORE THAN EIGHT OF TEN 8TH GRADE STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NECESSARY TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN HIGH SCHOOL. MATH COACHING HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR HIGH SCHOOL ALGEBRA BY EXPANDING STUDENTS' MATHEMATICAL VOCABULARY, IMPROVING FAMILIARITY WITH GRADE-LEVEL OBJECTIVES, BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN MATH PROBLEM-SOLVING AND FOSTERING AN APPRECIATION FOR MATH. -STEP-UP(READING AND MATH) PROVIDING A DEEPER ACADEMIC INTERVENTION ON A MORE FREQUENT BASIS (3 TIMES PER W
