In 2016 CPI worked directly, one-on-one, with 475 people of all ages, races, and several nationalities. We shared this work with audiences totaling 2400. We began the year with a month-long community engagement project on the themes of inclusion led by Dr. Richard Owen Geer with Saint Mary's College (24 students) and Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, CA, where we created a performance with 16 middle schoolers and performed for the 1100-person student body. Dr. Geer was joined by Dr. Qinghong Wei and 80 community leaders from as far away as New Zealand for a Story Bridge workshop. Similar Story Bridge projects occurred for 35 participants in March for the Association of Dispute Resolution for Northern California. In February Drs. Geer and Wei, using a script from stories community stories gathered by Middle Schoolers in Aiken Georgia, designed and directed a play for 80 youth and adults that was performed for approximately 800 persons of the community and school for the purpose of learning community history and improving race relations. In March we Geer and Wei continued the second year of voluntary work in service to The Intergenerational School in Cleveland, OH. We completed an additional three-week volunteer residency by creating and intergenerational performance scripted from community stories of 24 people and performed by an intergenerational cast of 42 for the entire student body, families, and members of a nearby senior center, attendance 400. In June Geer and Wei extended their voluntary work in support of international human rights by creating a performance in Beijing China with 40 migrant workers and performing for an audience of influential leaders and supporters of the NGO, Vibrant Communities. Residencies in Ashland and Kentucky for approximately one week each for populations of 50 and 30 on the themes of community relationship building. The year finished with Geer and Wei leading 30-person workshop on the theme of water as a shared resource among diverse people in Ashland OR, concluding with a performance for 100 and fundraiser for Native Americans raised several hundred dollars. And again, for the ADRNC, Geer and Wei facilitated a two-day workshop for about 24 on race in December.$0$54,007

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Dear IRS, My name is Richard Owen Geer, co-founder of Community Performance International. We are a grassroots organization that mainly serves disadvantaged communities by using storytelling and theater to engage citizen participation, build community rapport, aid conflict resolution, and promote peace-building across differences. Our organization operates on a small budget and our colleague and I volunteer a great amount of time and effort in order to help distressed communities. Since 2008 we have suffered severe financial difficulties. But the work is vital! So we have carried on despite the difficulties. For many years leading to 2017 we had not ever been late in filing our tax. During 2017 our organization was going through a lot changes. We began relocating the organization's base of operations from South Carolina to Colorado and shifting the administrative duties from one volunteer to another, including tax filing. Both of these volunteers were highly responsible, but unfortunately, as we much later found out, that an important email clarifying who would complete the 2016 filing was lost during the transition, and the two volunteers, one in Colorado, one in Florida--each thought the other was filing. Today, as we were having a staff meeting to begin the filing work for the 2017 tax year, to our horror we realized that neither of these two volunteers had completed the 2016 filing. As soon as we realized the issue, we immediately began the filing work for 2016, and investigated what had caused the issue. We now have put in place new policy and procedures that provide heightened level of supervising and staffing to ensure that all future tax filing will be conducted in a timely manner. To increase staff competency, we have recruited a new tax volunteer, a professional senior accountant to augment our financial and accounting functions. Dear IRS, we are deeply sorry about the unintentional late filing. We have exercised business care and prudence, and had never been late in our filing in so many years until now. We have immediately taken actions to address the problem prevent it from happening again. We are a small grassroots organization trying to do good beyond the very limited budget. This year I will turn 70. My vow is to keep serving people in need. I sincerely hope you would appreciate the good work and the good heart with which we do it. I am embarrassed by this failure of late filing, and with the promise that we will do better going forward, I'm respectfully asking you to abate the fine and allow us to move forward. Many, many thanks. Richard Owen Geer Co-founder, Board Member and Artistic Director Community Performance International
