Church Leaders' Training and Library ProjectsA second major emphasis for READ in 2011 was our Church Leaders Training and Library Projects. In partnership with our Ukrainian friends, READ was able to initiate the first ever electronic library training in Central Asia. This provided a people starved for God's Word not only the way, but the means, to access Christian media through the provision of netbooks and flash drives preloaded with several thousand volumes of Christian media resources. Over 2011-2012 READ plans to assist the theological education and ministry efforts of over 70 Christian workers in the countries of Central Asia. In addition to our digital library projects, READ conducted a conference for church leaders in November of 2011 in Minsk, Belarus. A total of 75 pastors throughout the country of Belarus were invited and 67 pastors and church leaders attended the conference. Upon completion of the conference, each attendee was given a 30 volume theological library placing over 2,000 theological books in the hands of church leaders throughout Belarus. During the conference, emphasis was placed on the use of biblical and theological resources, how to read critically, how to choose books, how to organize their personal resources and how to discern the theological soundness of Christian publishing houses. Also included was a session on the pros and cons of digital theological resources. At the end of the conference, many had tears in their eyes as they waved goodbye thanking us for the training and books provided by the conference. Christian Books in Public LibrariesThe ruling authorities in Ukraine issued an edict that Christian values should be taught in Ukrainian schools and books about Christian values made available for students. With this presidential mandate, there began a need for Christian resources to be provided for public use. READ is currently in the planning process of resourcing a Christian coffee house in Kremenchug, Ukraine. Institutional Library ProjectsDuring 2011, READ enthusiastically supplied resources to the orphanage ministry in Dunaevtsy, Ukraine. Through the efforts of the Bogomaz family, Christian books and Bibles brought smiles to the faces of those all too often forgotten by Ukrainian society. Plans are underway to expand our institutional library projects in 2012 into prisons, jails and rehab houses throughout Ukraine. Ministering to those people who find themselves in poverty and unfortunate circumstances in this part of the world is one way READ is fulfilling God's command to love our neighbors as ourselves.
