SOTENI AIDS Barefoot Doctors [ABD] : With SI's continued support, the AIDS Barefoot Doctors Program expanded to a third SVH, Ugenya. ABD are SOTENI-trained community health workers who provide home-based care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS [PLWHA]. Financed through a variety of grants, the ABD also have provided health-related services and education to the wider community in three SVHs. Since 2006, the ABD have made more than 5,000 home visits to people living with HIV/AIDS and have reached thousands more through public forums and other education sessions. In addition to providing home visits and education sessions, the ABDs are distributing water-purification sachets to PLWHA and others, and are educating the recipients in their use (see 4a). They also are educating and helping 50 PLWHA to establish kitchen gardens for improved nutrition and income generation. As of the end of this period, 15 ABD and 3 ABD Supervisors were deployed.

Activity 3

Sponsorship: SI continues its Sponsorship Program, now supporting 40 orphans and other vulnerable children in their quest for education. The support typically includes tuition, fees, uniforms, clothing, health care, food and psychosocial support. Students are matched up with sponsors from outside of Kenya whose annual sponsorship fees help to cover these expenses. The program promotes cultural interchanges, with sponsors receiving letters, updates, and photos from SOTENI and the students.
