Mission: rochester school for the deaf (rsd) provides exemplary opportunities in a bilingual environment to meet students' unique learning. Together, as a community, rsd challenges and prepares students for participation in the ever-changing world by: - creating an environment that empowers academic achievement, enables communication, and enriches social engagement; - using both proven and innovative programming along with current technologies; and - nurturing students in mind, body, and spiritedness culminating in self-awareness, cultural identity and pride.

DURING THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR, RSD SERVED 138 STUDENTS FROM 32 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN 16 COUNTIES. CHILDREN WERE ENROLLED IN DEAF INFANT, PRE-KINDERGARTEN, ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS (NEW YORK STATE REGISTERED PROGRAMS AWARDING REGENTS AND HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS, CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL STUDIES COMMENCEMENT CREDENTIALS AND SKILLS AND ACHIEVEMENT COMMENCEMENT CREDENTIALS). ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR INCLUDE: - IN 2018-2019 NINE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS QUALIFIED FOR GRADUATION.- FIVE FAMILIES WHO WERE NEW TO RSD PARTICIPATED IN THE DONOR-SUPPORTED SHARED READING PROJECT, WHERE HEARING PARENTS RECEIVE IN-HOME TUTORING FOR READING STORYBOOKS TO THEIR DEAF CHILDREN IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. - IN DENTON HALL A STORAGE ROOM WAS CONVERTED INTO AN ART STUDIO FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM STUDENTS AND THE PLAYROOM WAS CONVERTED INTO A MULTI-PURPOSE AREA WHERE ALL EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM STUDENTS CAN GATHER FOR EVENTS.- RSD ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS ARE CONTINUING WITH COMMON CORE LEARNING STANDARDS, INCLUDING 3RD-8TH GRADE TESTING PROGRAMS. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL DEPARTMENTS IMPLEMENTED ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH COMMON CORE STANDARDS.- SCHOOL-WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION & SUPPORTS (PBIS) INCLUDE A PROGRAM FOR ALL LEVELS FROM PRESCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL.- RSD MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS DEVELOPED A S.T.E.M. PROGRAM AND PARTICIPATED IN A LOCAL ROBOTICS COMPETITION. - MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BATTLE OF THE BOOKS NATIONAL COMPETITION AND ONE OF THE THREE TEAMS TRAVELED TO WASHINGTON, DC TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL FINALS. - LIFE SKILLS CURRICULUM STUDENTS CREATED A WILDCAT BUSINESS PROGRAM TO LEARN ABOUT COOKING, INVENTORY, MONEY SKILLS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND PLACING LUNCH ORDERS. THEY ALSO WORKED AT VARIOUS JOBS OFF-CAMPUS.- HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS VISITED THE NEW YORK STATE CAPITAL COMPLEX IN ALBANY FOR ADVOCACY DAY, HELPING TO RAISE AWARENESS OF 4201 ASSOCIATION SCHOOLS AND THEIR FUNDING AMONG STATE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY MEMBERS. - HIGH SCHOOL ALSO HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY, VOLUNTEERING AT VARIOUS SITES IN THE COMMUNITY. - MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WELCOMED TO CAMPUS SEVERAL DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING ADULT ROLE MODELS WHO PRESENTED TO STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR UPBRINGING, EDUCATION, AND SUCCESSFUL CAREERS.- RSD VARSITY SOCCER TEAM WAS SELECTED AS NDIAA NATIONAL TEAM OF THE YEAR AND ATHLETE THOMAS COATES WAS NAMED SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR.- RSD VARSITY GIRLS AND BOYS TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS EACH WON THEIR ESDAA DIV II CHAMPIONSHIPS THE FIRST-EVER FOR THE BOYS TEAM.- THE USE OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENT LAPTOPS, WIKIS AND BLOGS CONTINUE TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF RSD ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS' INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN.- RSD WORKS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT TO RECEIVE TITLE IIA FUNDS TO BE USED FOR TEACHER AND SUPPORT STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
