Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Mission: rochester school for the deaf (rsd) provides exemplary opportunities in a bilingual environment to meet students' unique learning. Together, as a community, rsd challenges and prepares students for participation in the ever-changing world by: - creating an environment that empowers academic achievement, enables communication, and enriches social engagement; - using both proven and innovative programming along with current technologies; and - nurturing students in mind, body, and spiritedness culminating in self-awareness, cultural identity and pride.

Rochester school for the deaf is entrusted, empowered, and funded to provide and enhance the educational and life growth experiences in an optimal environment for children and students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The school's services include educational opportunities for children from birth through age 21, a modified academic curriculum for students with developmental disabilities in addition to deafness. Also, rsd is committed to providing students with a supportive environment for growth and academic achievement. One means rsd uses to demonstrate this support is by offering american sign language classes free of charge to students family members, and to others from the community for a nominal fee.

The school is an exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (the code). The school has also been classified as an entity that is not a private foundation. The school is required to file annual returns with federal and new york state taxing authorities. At june 30, 2016 the related federal and state annual returns are no longer subject to examination by ther respective taxing authorities for the fiscal years prior to 2012. Management has determined that the school has no uncertain tax positions, including the tax exempt status of the school, as of june 30, 2016.

DURING THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR, RSD SERVED 122 STUDENTS FROM 39 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN 12 COUNTIES. CHILDREN WERE ENROLLED IN ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS (NEW YORK STATE REGISTERED PROGRAMS AWARDING REGENTS AND HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL STUDIES COMMENCEMENT CREDENTIALS). ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR INCLUDE: (SEE ATTACHMENT A):ATTACHMENT A4A. (CONTINUED FROM FORM 990, PART III, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS)- IN 2015-2016 RSD GRADUATED FOUR STUDENTS. THESE STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THEIR RSD EDUCATIONAL STUDIES AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING. THREE WERE ACCEPTED INTO COLLEGES AND ONE HAS GAINED EMPLOYMENT IN THE WORLD OF WORK.- FOUR FAMILIES WHO WERE NEW TO RSD PARTICIPATED IN THE DONOR-SUPPORTED SHARED READING PROJECT, WHERE HEARING PARENTS RECEIVE IN-HOME TUTORING FOR READING TO THEIR DEAF CHILDREN IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. THREE FAMILIES PREVIOUS ENROLLED WERE ALSO SUPPORTED IN THIS PROJECT. - RSD ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS ARE CONTINUING WITH COMMON CORE LEARNING STANDARDS, INCLUDING 3RD-8TH GRADE TESTING PROGRAM CHANGES. GRAYBILL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL. MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BATTLE OF THE BOOKS NATIONAL COMPETITION FOR A CHANCE TO TRAVEL TO GALLAUDET FOR THE NATIONAL FINALS. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IMPLEMENTED A POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORTS (PBIS) PROGRAM. - A GROUP OF RSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TRAVELED TO ITALY AS PART OF RSD'S TRAVEL ABROAD PROGRAM. ALSO, STUDENTS VISITED THE NEW YORK STATE CAPITAL COMPLEX IN ALBANY FOR ADVOCACY DAY, HELPING TO RAISE AWARENESS OF 4201 SCHOOLS AND THEIR FUNDING AMONG LEGISLATORS AND ASSEMBLY MEMBERS. HIGH SCHOOL ALSO HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY, VOLUNTEERING AT VARIOUS SITES IN THE COMMUNITY. THE CLASS OF 2016 PRODUCED AN ASL MUSIC VIDEO TITLED "THE MIDDLE" WHICH EARNED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF VIEWS ONLINE NATIONWIDE.- RSD LIFE SKILLS STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A VARIETY PAID, OFF-CAMPUS WORK EXPERIENCES. THEY EXPERIENCED A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT JOBS AND COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES.- THE USE OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENT LAPTOPS, WIKIS AND BLOGS CONTINUE TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF RSD HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM INSTRUCTION.- HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MET SEVERAL DEAF ADULT ROLE MODELS WHO VISITED RSD TO PRESENT ABOUT THEIR UPBRINGING, SCHOOLING, FAMILY AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE.- EIGHTEEN (18) HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE ON-CAMPUS SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM.- RSD WORKS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT TO RECEIVE TITLE IIA FUNDS TO BE USED FOR TEACHER AND SUPPORT STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. RSD TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ATTENDED WORKSHOPS ON VARIOUS TOPICS: DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION, EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT, PICTURE EXCHANGE SYSTEM (PECS), LBGTQ INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS, AND TOPICS RELATED TO ART AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, TRANSITION PLANNING, ELA AND ASL CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION AND STEM EDUCATION.- THE RSD GIVING TREE PROGRAM SUPPORTED 13 FAMILIES AND 53 CHILDREN DURING THE HOLIDAYS.- FOUR RSD STUDENTS PARTICIPATED AS A TEAM IN THE GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY NATIONAL ACADEMIC BOWL COMPETITION.- RSD 2015 ADVENTURES IN EDUCATION PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDED THE PARTICIPATION OF DEAF STUDENTS FROM LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND MORE THAN 290 ADULTS FROM THE COMMUNITY, FEATURED A PRESENTATION BY NAVY SEAL PLATOON COMMANDER JAMES WATERS.- THIS WAS AN
