The mission of dunbar association, inc. Is to enhance the quality of life, break the cycle of poverty, and develop racial equity in our community by strengthening youth and their families through a comprehensive delivery of services that promote advocacy and education.

DUNBAR NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISORS ENDEAVOR TO ASSIST OUR AGING SENIORS TO LEAD SOUND INDEPENDENT LIVES. THE PROGRAM SEEKS TO PROMOTE AN ATMOSPHERE WHERE SENIORS FEEL SAFE AND VALUED.NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISORS PROVIDE INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDED SERVICES TO ADULTS AGE 60+. THE PROGRAM SERVES AS A CONDUIT TO THE MYRIAD OF EXISTING AGENCIES THAT PROVIDE ENTITLEMENT BENEFITS AND SOCIAL SERVICES, WHICH ENABLE OLDER PEOPLE TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES AND PARTICIPATE IN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LIFE. THE NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISORS ARE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE AGING AND ARE RESPECTFUL OF AN INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION AND AUTONOMY.TRANSPORTATION:DUNBAR PROVIDES TRANSPORTATION FOR SOME OF THE MOST VULNERABLE SENIORS IN OUR COMMUNITY. THE NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISOR PROGRAM HAS PROVIDED RIDES TO THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO MIGHT HAVE OTHERWISE GONE UNSERVED. PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THERE WAS AN INCREASE IN PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AS MORE THAN 200 SENIORS BENEFIT FROM SERVICES PROVIDED TO THEM BY DUNBAR. AS SENIOR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AGE AND AS CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS EXIST, MANY SENIORS FIND IT DIFFICULT TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM ACTIVITIES. THESE INDIVIDUALS OFTEN SUFFER FROM MEDICAL ISSUES AND A LACK OF SOCIAL INTERACTION. AS A RESULT, DUNBAR IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING FREE DOOR TO DOOR TRANSPORTATION FOR SENIORS TO ATTEND DUNBAR'S PROGRAMMING AS WELL AS MEDICAL-RELATED APPOINTMENTS.

THE PROGRAM OFFERS A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOUTH CAN FORM HEALTHY PEER/ADULT RELATIONSHIPS, GAIN EXPOSURE TO CULTURALLY ENRICHED AND DIVERSE LEARNING EXPERIENCES, ACADEMIC SUPPORT, AND HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE, AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY. UTILIZING COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, STAFF WILL DELIVER A COMPREHENSIVE STRENGTH-BASED PROGRAM. STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE IN PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES FOCUSING ON SELF-ESTEEM, POSITIVE IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCY, ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT, ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY SERVICE AND DECISION MAKING.NATIONAL GRID TRADES CAMP:THE TRADES CAMP IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH NATIONAL GRID PROVIDED TO CREATE AWARENESS TO CAREER ALTERNATIVES WITHIN THE UTILITY INDUSTRY. THE SUMMER PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP A PIPELINE OF STUDENTS INTERESTED IN TRADES AND APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES. HANDS-ON PROJECTS IN THE FIELD OF PLUMBING, CARPENTRY AND SOLAR ENERGY ARE THE FOCUS.NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS JUNIOR (NSBEJR):THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS JUNIOR PROGRAM IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SYRACUSE CHAPTER OF THE LINKS, INCORPORATED DESIGNED TO PROVIDE AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES TO HELP STUDENTS IN GRADES 3 THROUGH 5 DISCOVER FIRSTHAND HOW ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY RELATE TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM. STUDENTS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER THE EXCITEMENT OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE,LEADERSHIP, TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT, AND TEAMWORK.SUMMER:DUNBAR ASSOCIATION, INC. OFFERED A COMPREHENSIVE SUPER SUMMER VIRTUAL PROGRAM FOR 100 STUDENTS IN GRADES 2 THROUGH 12. THE PROGRAM WAS HELD VIRTUALLY FOR EIGHT (8) WEEKS AND OPERATED FROM 10AM TO 3PM MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. PROGRAM GOALS INCLUDED: PROVIDING AN ARRAY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING, SKILL BUILDING, SUPPORT AND FUN, ADDRESSING DISPARITIES AMONG MINORITY STUDENTS AND THEIR INABILITY TO GAIN ACCESS TO ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES, DEVELOPING A SUPPORTIVE ACADEMIC PROGRAM THAT MET STUDENTS WHERE THEY WERE AND HELPED THEM DEVELOP SKILLS, BUILD CONFIDENCE, AND EXPLORE INTEREST IN AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL AND OFFERED VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING TO KEEP YOUTH ACTIVE, ENGAGED AND LEARNING.EACH STUDENT WAS PROVIDED WITH A CHROME BOOK AND PARTICIPATED IN PROGRAMS UTILIZING A ZOOM PLATFORM. DUNBAR STAFF ALSO LOGGED INTO ZOOM WITH THE USE OF AGENCY LAPTOPS. TO MAINTAIN COMPLIANCE, DUNBAR STAFF TOOK ATTENDANCE WHILE ALSO ENSURING THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS.STUDENTS CURRENTLY ATTENDING THE DUNBAR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM WILL BE INVITED TO PRE-REGISTER. SECOND PRIORTY WILL BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO RESIDE ON THE SOUTHSIDE OF SYRACUSE. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, PROGRAM PROMOTION WILL BE LIMITED TO SOCIAL MEDIA AND WORD OF MOUTH.DUNBAR HIRED CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND ASSISTANTS TO PROVIDE ONR HOUR OF INSTRUCTION EACH DAY IN LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH AND READING COMPREHENSION. STUDENTS ARE GROUPED BY AGE AND PROVIDED A NEW CHROME BOOK WITH CURRICULUM SOFTWARE FOR IXL(LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH) AND THE ACCELERATED READING(READING COMPREHENSION)PROGRAM.EACH DAY STUDENTS WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN INCENTIVES TO ENCOURAGE AND CELEBRATE THEIR PARTICIPATION, ENGAGEMENT, AND SUCCESSES.
