“Dunbar is one of the few settlement houses still in operation. In 1918, barber jimmy lagrin, conceived of providing recreational activities for black youth, and, under the auspices of the ame zion church created a recreational program. Lagrin became acquainted with black students attending syracuse university, active in a literary group called the paul lawrence dunbar society. Using the settlement house model, lagrin enlisted the aid of miss lucia knowles, mrs. Frederick hazard and her sister, mrs. Walter burlingame, members of the commonwealth club, an influential business group. Due to the su students' interest in poet paul lawrence dunbar's work, a black community center was born...dunbar. Incorporated in 1932, dunbar has served many functions throughout its history, and continues to serve as a beacon of hope. For instance, in the past due to segregation, the agency filled the gaps created by the color line, and served as a training and employment center during wwii; staff and volunteers worked to increase housing opportunities in syracuse; in the 1950's during the polio crisis, dunbar played a vital role in helping to improve the health status of the community. Dunbar continues to offer programs that strengthen families, seniors and youth; provide a safe place for community members of all ages and backgrounds to come together to share, learn and grow as we move toward dunbar's 100th year and beyond. In 2017 we anticipate significantly reducing past debt. The organization had a significant portion of their previous debt retired in early 2017. In 2018, and for the future dunbar is receiving from substantial local firms, legal services on a pro bono basis and accounting services on pro bono and fee for service basis. Such firms offer dunbar a broad spectrum of service that will assist the dunbar association in realizing their mission, including their future financial goals.”

WE TRACK STUDENT ATTENDANCE AND FOLLOW UP WITH FAMILIES WHEN THEIR PARTICIPANT MISSES A PROGRAM SESSION. OUR YOUTH RECEIVE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS THROUGH LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES. FOR EXAMPLE, WE RECENTLY HAD A FITNESS PROFESSIONAL WORK WITH OUR YOUTH ABOUT MANAGING STRESS. HE GUIDED THE PARTICIPANTS THROUGH STRETCHES AND SPRINTS THAT HELP RELIEVE STRESS AND FEELINGS OF AGGRESSSION.OUR PROGRAMS EXPOSE YOUTH TO STEAM AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES. DURING THIS REPORTING PERIOD, OUR YOUTH PROGRAM PARTNERED WITH NATIONAL GRID TO HOST A SPECIAL ROBOTICS COURSE TO YOUTH AGES 13-16. PRESENTERS FROM LOCAL TRADE UNIONS CAME IN AND SHARED INFORMATION ABOUT THE WORK THEY DO. THEY DISCUSSED HOW A PERSON WOULD GO ABOUT GETTING INTO THE FIELD OF PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. OUR PROGRAM STAFF IS WORKING TO PROVIDE YOUTH WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE FOCUSED ON ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION, AND GREEN CULTURE.OUR PROGRAM EXPLORES CULTURE AND HERITAGE THROUGH EDUCATION, ACTIVITIES, FIELD TRIPS AND RECOGNITION OF SPECIAL DAYS AND EVENTS, SUCH AS, INDIGENIOUS PEOPLE'S DAY AND KWANZAA, ETC. OUR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH ANOTHER LOCAL YOUTH PROGRAM CALLED THE TEEN OUTREACH PROGRAM (TOP). TOP IS A PROGRAM OF SYRACUSE COMMUMNITY CONNECTIONS, AND CONDUCTS PROGRAMMING AT VARIOUS YOUTH CENTER SITES ACROSS SYRACUSE. OUR PROGRAM HAS PLANS TO COLLABORATE WITH TOP THROUGH THEIR PROGRAM RUN AT RISE, A LOCAL YOUTH CENTER THAT SERVES MUSLIM YOUTH ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CITY. LAGRIN BECAME ACQUAINTED WITH BLACK STUDENTS ATTENDING SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, ACTIVE IN A LITERARY GROUP CALLED THE PAUL LAWRENCE DUNBAR SOCIETY. USING THE SETTLEMENT HOUSE MODEL, LAGRIN ENLISTED THE AID OF MISS LUCIA KNOWLES, MRS. FREDERICK HAZARD AND HER SISTER, MRS. WALTER BURLINGAME, MEMBERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH CLUB, AN INFLUENTIAL BUSINESS GROUP. DUE TO THE SU STUDENTS' INTEREST IN POET PAUL LAWRENCE DUNBAR'S WORK, A BLACK COMMUNITY CENTER WAS BORN...DUNBAR. INCORPORATED IN 1932, DUNBAR HAS SERVED MANY FUNCTIONS THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, AND CONTINUES TO SERVE AS A BEACON OF HOPE. FOR INSTANCE, IN THE PAST DUE TO SEGREGATION, THE AGENCY FILLED THE GAPS CREATED BY THE COLOR LINE, AND SERVED AS A TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT CENTER DURING WWII; STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS WORKED TO INCREASE HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES IN SYRACUSE; IN THE 1950'S DURING THE POLIO CRISIS, DUNBAR PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN HELPING TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH STATUS OF THE COMMUNITY. DUNBAR CONTINUES TO OFFER PROGRAMS THAT STRENGTHEN FAMILIES, SENIORS AND YOUTH; PROVIDE A SAFE PLACE FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS TO COME TOGETHER TO SHARE, LEARN AND GROW AS WE MOVE TOWARD DUNBAR'S 100TH YEAR AND BEYOND. IN 2017 WE ANTICIPATE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING PAST DEBT. THE ORGANIZATION HAD A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THEIR PREVIOUS DEBT RETIRED IN EARLY 2017. IN 2018, AND FOR THE FUTURE DUNBAR IS RECEIVING FROM SUBSTANTIAL LOCAL FIRMS, LEGAL SERVICES ON A PRO BONO BASIS AND ACCOUNTING SERVICES ON PRO BONO AND FEE FOR SERVICE BASIS.
