Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7A

The members advisory council, or mac, consists of individuals who are active advisors, advocates, ambassadors and supporters of the foundations mission. Many of the mac members were participants in our program or had first hand personal experience with the foundation. The members of the mac elect individuals to serve as directors on the board. The board, itself, elects officers from among its directors. The president of the board serves ex-officio member on the mac and the chair of the mac serves ex-officio on the board.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The form 990 is reviewed by an audit committee, with recommendations of the audit committee presented to the board and finance & investment committee for review and action, if needed.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Copies of all disclosures are maintained by the director of operations, a staff member through whom purchases, contracts, and expense payments are centralized. All new vendors, contractors, consultants, or other providers of goods and services, including employment applicants, are routinely compared to the current board members disclosure documents. Potential conflicts, should they be observed, would be surfaced to the board for review, discussion, and resolution prior to any action.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Routine, periodic review and documentation of total compensation elements within the non-profit industry sector, drawing on multiple, credible data sources and, where feasible, specific organizational characteristics (e.g., comparable size and business focus). Review of data by relevant committees (e.g., executive search committee, finance & investment committee, executive committee) prior to review by full board of directors. Executive director's performance is evaluated, annually, by the executive committee, independent of the executive director. Performance is assessed versus previously documented goals and objectives; inputs may be obtained from other board members, staff, alumni, and other relevant persons. The full board, absent the executive director votes on proposed compensation resolutions with contemporaneous documentation of proposed resolutions and outcomes.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The mission of the louis august jonas foundation, inc. Is "to develop in promising young people from diverse backgrounds a lifelong commitment to sensitive and responsible leadership for the betterment of their communities and the world." since 1930, the foundation has pursued this mission through its international scholarship program, camp rising sun, and its alumni associations around the world.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

With a full-time staff of only 5 (one full-time on-site at the rhinebeck campuses; three at the nyc office; one at a satellite office in virginia), lajf relies heavily on volunteers to accomplish the complex business of operating a residential educational program for 120 teenage students from all around the world each summer. As in the past, we have documented board of directors' volunteer time commitment and have roughly estimated the time our other volunteers spend. Those numbers follow. Board of directors 13 directors members advisory council 14 members directors emeriti 9 members committees (number of members excludes board members) alumni relations-3 members audit - 5 members buildings and grounds - varies (4) committee on directors - 3 members finance and investment - 6 members health and safety - 6 members major donor-3 members program - 7 members scholarship - 4 members selection policy - 5 members visit team - 8 members selection of program participants by volunteers from: colorado barbados greece palestinian territory california bulgaria hungary peru new mexico china iran poland utah denmark israel south africa washington dc egypt japan spain new york city region finland korea sweden south carolina france netherlands turkey mississippi germany nigeria united kingdom minnesota ghana norway zambia in some locations, one or two individuals work with schools, youth organizations or government agencies to select program participants. In most, however, committees of between 4 and 20 volunteers collaborate on the following activities: conducting information sessions for students at schools and other youth sites conducting information sessions for parents reading through application materials: short-answer questions; essays; teacher references; transcripts, and developing a list of candidates to interview organizing an interview day, requiring securing a location, communicating with invitees (and those rejected), developing an interview protocol and supporting documents, disseminating candidate materials to team of interviewers, conducting the interviews, notifying the successful candidates sending materials to lajf headquarters visiting with families of successful candidates assisting with travel arrangements arranging a camper send-off connecting with campers during the summer organizing a "welcome home" event a conservative estimate of volunteers who participate in selection would range from 250 to 275. One person who participates in all the above activities would spend about 30 hours on selection. More commonly, the tasks are distributed among several individuals. However, the cumulative number of hours would surely total in the low thousands, given the 36 selection sites. The 24 families of participants in the nyc area are joined by an additional 10 alumni family and are hosts to participants who fly into and out of nyc airports from their homes around the nation and the world. One to three days on each end of the summer picking students up from airports upon arrival home stays, including all meals sightseeing in the nyc area driving students to airports for trips home hosting asks dozens of hours of volunteers each year. It is estimated that 100 volunteers are needed prior to camp and after camp to house our campers until they depart via airplane for home. Volunteer staff at the red hook and clinton campuses (7 - 14 days) each summer, between 4 and 10 program alumni volunteer to spend one or two weeks, full-time (meaning 24 hours per day) at the campuses and assume the roles of counselors, nurses, etc.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Full scholarship. Each year campers from more than 25 countries are invited to attend camp in the belief that youth with different life experiences and from a variety of diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds have much to offer each other. There are two camp sessions one for 60 boys, and the other for 60 girls. Campers attend rising sun for only one full time summer. The crs program is meant to serve as a watershed in the development of an individual's identity. Its success lies in encouraging in each camper the fullest realization of his or her intellectual, cultural (artistic, musical, and literary), humanistic and ethical capabilities. In the shorter term, through the camp experience, campers can develop new self-awareness, increased self-confidence, and enhanced perceptions and understanding of the world around them. Many campers do not feel the full impact of the program until well after the end of the camp season. After camp rising sun has ended, alumni continue to develop their leadership skills through serving on camper selection and board committees and alumni associations. The camp rising sun alumni community is vibrant, with a worldwide network that hosts numerous regional gatherings each year. The foundation awards scholarships to support alumni pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees through the george e. Jonas scholars and for the first time in 2015, offered fellowship positions in non-profit management and program development. The foundation's arise program awards grants to alumni pursuing humanitarian service projects for the betterment of their communities and the world through publications and events.

IRS990/Desc0CAMP RISING SUN (CRS) IS AN INTERNATIONAL SUMMER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 14 TO 16. SELECTION IS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE AND IS BASED ON INTELLECT (DEMONSTRATED ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND AN ABILITY TO THINK CRITICALLY), CHARACTER (HONESTY, COMPASSION, INTEGRITY), LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL (SELF-CONFIDENCE, OPENNESS AND FAIRNESS IN DEALING WITH OTHERS), AND INDIVIDUALITY (DEVELOPED ABILITIES AND INTERESTS). A SPECIAL FOCUS OF THE CAMP EXPERIENCE IS THE NURTURING OF ETHICAL LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THE LOUIS AUGUST JONAS FOUNDATION (LAJF) OPERATES CAMP RISING SUN AND RECRUITS CAMPERS WORLDWIDE. CAMPERS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE ARE AWARDED A FULL SCHOLARSHIP.
