Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

No change from prior year.

FORM 990, PART IX, LINE 24A:

All lobbying expenses are reflected in part ix, statement of functional expenses, in the science center planning included on line 24a, as they pertain to the museum's plans for building a new science center.

Amended Return

The form 990 was amended to properly state the total revenue (form 990, part viii), and total expenses (part ix) for 2017. Due to the changes in revenue and expenses, the balance sheet (form 990, part x), was also amended.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Collections the museums's collections are made up of artifacts of historical, cultural, or scientific significance that are held for educational, research, scientific, or curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales to be used for the improvement and maintenance of existing collections. In accordance with the practice generally followed by museums, the value of objects in the collections is excluded from the financial statements; collections are reflected in the accompanying financial statements at a nominal value of $1. Since the museum's inception, such collections were acquired primarily through contributions. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets, if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in net assets.

PART V, LINE 4:

Income from endowment fund is to be used for operating purposes.
