Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Part iii, line 1a: collections the museum's collections are made up of artifacts of historical, cultural, or scientific significance that are held for educational, research, scientific, or curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales to be used for the improvement and maitenance of existing collections. In accordance with the practice generally followed by museums, the value of objects in the collections is excluded from the financial statements; collections are reflected in the accompanying financial statements at a nominal value of $1. Since the museum's inception, such collections were acquired primarily through contributions. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets, if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in net assets.

PART V, LINE 4:

Income from endowment fund is to be used for operating purposes.

PART X, LINE 2:

Income taxes, includes a disclosure related to uncertain tax positions. The text related to the museum's liability is as follows: for tax-exempt entities, their tax exempt status itself is deemed to be an uncertainty, since events could potentially occur to jeopardize their tax exempt status. As of december 31, 2014, the museum does not have a liability for unrecognized tax benefits. The museum files exempt organization tax returns in the u.s. Federal jurisdiction and new york state. The museum is no longer subject to u.s. Federal and state examinations by tax authorities for years before 2011.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Special events expenses 20,827. Cost of sales 51,961.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Special events expense 20,827. Cost of sales 51,961.

IRS990/MissionDesc0TO INSPIRE A SENSE OF WONDER ABOUT EXTRAORDINARY SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. THE MUSEUM FULFILLS THIS MISSION BY PRESERVING AND INTERPRETING THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETY AND CULTURE BEGINNING IN THE 19TH CENTURY. WE EXPLORE THE CREATIVE PROCESS AND HUMAN SPIRIT THAT INSPIRES DISCOVERY AND INVENTION, AND IMAGINE WHAT IS YET TO BE.
