Mission

Effective public education is essential to the success of a democratic society. The mission of center for educational innovation (cei) is threefold: 1) assist public schools in new york city and other communities in improving the quality of publiceducation. Our professional experience and expertise help schools to create more productive environments in which students thriveacademically, socially and emotionally. With our support, schools develop better leadership, better teaching and better systems ofaccountability; 2) based upon cei's work with individual schools,advocate for policies and practices that will lead to successful schools; 3) provide information to the public about the importanceof quality public education and the means of achieving it. To thoseends, cei assists large schools to restructure into sets of smaller learning communities, works with teams to create and develop charter schools, trains principals in effective leadership skills,and facilitates collaboration betwee

Major Activities

Activity 2
Pso, see schedule onyc department of education - partnership support organization - partnership support organization (pso) is a 6 year contract with the nyc department of education that began july 1, 2007. As a pso, cei-pea was providing during 2011-12 customized support to 148 public schools to help teachers and school leaders accelerate learning among more than 70,000 students. These services are delivered on-site, embedded professional development, as well as through a network system in which schools identify collective changes for network-wide professional development. Schools have different needs, working styles and educational cultures. In order to meet the specific needs of individual schools, cei-pea's model provides both a core leadership team and a school customized pool of instructional specialists.
Activity 3
Piccs, see schedule o.us department of education - teacher incentive fund - partnership for innovative compensation for charter schools program (piccs). Piccs was initially a 5 year project helping nyc charter schools recruit, retain, develop, and reward top quality teachers and school leaders. Funded initially through a $10.5 million teacher incentive fund (tif) grant from the us department of education, piccs is designed to drive increases in student performance. Due to the success of the program, cei-pea was awarded 2 additional piccs (tif3) grants in fy 2010. Additional charter schools in new york city, and buffalo, ny were added to the program. Piccs takes a comprehensive approach to performance-based compensation by integrating the latest educational technology with best practices in peer review and technical assistance to generate a community of educators striving for excellence. During the final year of the original piccs grant with the achievement of all deliverables, incentives based upon student outcomes were paid to teachers and school leaders in the 9 participating charter schools of approximately $ 712,000. In the second year of our tif3 piccs grants, 12 charter schools were given approximately $662,000. National leadership activities funded our building better charter schools grant. The network of independent charter schools helps independent "mom and pop" charter schools succeed. The network helps principals, teachers, administrators and trustees at independent charter schools collaborate with one another and establish and sustain effective programs. The network delivers a comprehensive and integrated array of services and resources free of charge to support teachers, administrators and trustees at independent charter schools.
