“Project pericles is an association of american colleges and universities committed to reawakening american undergraduate education to its responsibility to prepare students to be effective citizens and leaders of their communities, nations, and world. We believe that alongside equipping students with the content and skills required for success in their careers, higher education must develop their capacity and motivation for critical examination of the priorities that societies set, for informed evaluation of policies, and actions in the light of those priorities, and for making a personal difference, through and beyond their careers, towards realizing those priorities. If undergraduate education does not make this broader responsibility more central to its mission, it will, we fear, fail to prepare the leadership our democracy and world need and may place at long-term risk the future of our democracy itself. Through the courses they offer, the community-based experiences and opportunities for service they design, and the campus policies and practices they set, periclean institutions, individually and collaboratively, explore, develop, and model means through which they and fellow undergraduate institutions can deliver on this educational imperative.”

“Civic engagement program: encourage and facilitate commitments by colleges and universities to include social responsibility and participatory citizenship as essential elements of their educational programs. Project pericles works individually and collaboratively with member institutions to develop, spread, and sustain model civic engagement programs. Debating for democracy (d4d): a series of campus-based programs that equip students with the skills and knowledge to advocate for policy change and get their messages across to elected officials, fellow students, community groups, and the media. The periclean faculty leadership (pfl) program: a leadership program that supports faculty to develop innovative courses in collaboration with community partners, and empowers students to apply academic content to help solve real-world problems. Courses address grand challenges: climate change, economic justice, education access, immigration, mass incarceration, public health, race and inequality, and voter engagement. Periclean faculty leaders (pfls) advance public scholarship and engage in peer collaboration with pfls at other institutions. Civic engagement resources: online resources for faculty across all disciplines and other campus stakeholders who are interested in: civic engagement course syllabi, community-engaged learning, deliberative dialogue, nonpartisan voter education, and addressing voter suppression. When resources are used together, students see the connections between the issues that affect them, their elected officials, the impact of their vote, and how they can combat voter suppression.”
