“Project pericles is an association of american colleges and universities committed to reawakening american undergraduate education to its responsibility to prepare students to be effective citizens and leaders of their communities, nations, and world. We believe that alongside equipping students with the content and skills required for success in their careers, higher education must develop their capacity and motivation for critical examination of the priorities that societies set, for informed evaluation of policies, and actions in the light of those priorities, and for making a personal difference, through and beyond their careers, towards realizing those priorities. If undergraduate education does not make this broader responsibility more central to its mission, it will, we fear, fail to prepare the leadership our democracy and world need and may place at long-term risk the future of our democracy itself. Through the courses they offer, the community-based experiences and opportunities for service they design, and the campus policies and practices they set, periclean institutions, individually and collaboratively, explore, develop, and model means through which they and fellow undergraduate institutions can deliver on this educational imperative.”

“Debating for democracy (d4d) is a distinctive campus-based program that represents the mission of project pericles in action. D4d promotes civic engagement and effective advocacy skills among a wide range of students. Through d4d on the road workshops hosted on periclean campuses, the d4d national conference in new york city, the d4d letters to an elected official competition, and co-curricular programs on each campus, students acquire the tools and tactics they need to advance their issues and to get their messages across to community groups, fellow students, the general public, government officials, and the media. The periclean faculty leadership (pfl) program is a leadership and course development program dedicated to incorporating civil dialogue, civic engagement, and social responsibility across the undergraduate curriculum. With support from project pericles, the periclean faculty leaders create new courses incorporating civic engagement; promote civil dialogue locally through lectures, town hall meetings, and public events; and advance public scholarship nationally and internationally through publications and conference presentations. Courses address grand challenges: climate change, economic justice, education access, immigration, mass incarceration, public health, race and inequality, and voter engagement. They champion civil discourse, civic engagement, and social responsibility in the classroom, on the campus, and in the community. We have a diverse group of professors from a wide range of disciplines including archaeology and classical studies, business law, chemistry, communications, computer science, dance, education, english, environmental studies, history, mathematics and statistics, philosophy, physics, psychology, religious studies, sociology, theatre, urban studies, and women's and gender studies. The project pericles voting modules are a set of curricular modules to support faculty across all disciplines interested in incorporating nonpartisan voter education into their courses. They provide the ideas and tools necessary to incorporate civil dialogue that demonstrates the importance of voting into the classroom. The modules are free and available online. The modules cover: deliberative dialogue discussions, why voting matters, how to vote, and addressing voter suppression.”
