Through a series of educational workshops and open neighborhood forums, community members will develop new proposals for how the access, connectivity, and circulation of this regional destination can better serve the publics needs. The Design Trust awarded paid fellowships to a community organizer, a design educator, and an artist/participatory designer to recruit community advisors, develop the curriculum for the community design workshops, and design a public exhibition. For our Laying the Groundwork project, we formed a partnership with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development to create a set of guidelines that will address the design and use of new ground-floor retail spaces in mixed-use affordable housing developments. These guidelines will ensure that new mixed-use developments include the kind of spacious, flexible storefronts that can attract local entrepreneurs, provide vital services like banks and grocers as well as cultural amenities, while supporting active and vibrant streets. The Design Trust awarded paid fellowships to an engineer, a graphic designer, and two architects to lead the research, design and policy work for the project.We also began the research and development for two exploratory projects: Future Culture in partnership with Staten Island Arts, and Opening the Edge in collaboration with the New York City Housing Authority.
