Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Tntp's mission is to transform education so every young person thrives.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Performance managementa critical part of our work includes helping states build, pilot, and implement rigorous, fair, and accurate educator evaluation and development systems centered on how educators are performing in their most critical role: advancing student learning. Our partners have included louisiana, indiana, illinois, rhode island and tennessee as well as numerous districts. Because of our 2012 partnerships for this work, tntp was pivotal in ensuring that 10,500 teachers had a rigorous, student-focused evaluation that fosters collaborative relationship between teachers and principals. In 2012, in new york city, our evaluation system helped the district learn that 5.3% of their teachers were ineffective, 34.5% were developing, 49.3% were effective, 10.3% rated highly effective. This information is critical to inform their talent management decisions. We're also training educators to put the new tools into practice, helping individual school leaders make more informed decisions about teachers and create strong teaching teams. In 2012, we helped our target partner districts retain over 75% of effective teachers return for a 2nd year in our target districts. We also designed a state-of-the-art compensation system that will allow the achievement school district to attract top talent to the highest-need schools. We also partner with school districts to improve the flow of qualified teachers into their lowest-performing schools, ensuring that these schools, often in the poorest neighborhoods, open fully staffed. We focus on building the capacity of school principals to take a strategic approach to staffing that allows them to attract and hire the best teachers possible. Through our model staffing initiatives we demonstrate how schools can establish effective teacher hiring practices and put in place model strategies that can ultimately be rolled out to all schools in the district. In memphis city schools alone, we identified and filled 1,309 teacher vacancies in 188 schools to ensure that, at the start of the 2012-13 school year, the district was 99% staffed.
Activity 3
Policy, research and advocacytntp is helping schools, districts, and states understand how teachers are performing and what they need to do to get better. We do this in part by conducting targeted research to identify the obstacles that school systems face to hiring the best teachers possible and quantify the impact of these obstacles on schools, students, and teachers. Our data-driven approach enables us to talk plainly and objectively about the problems we find, to argue for key reforms, and to provide effective tools and realistic recommendations to district officials, legislators, and policy-makers. In 2012, we published a national report that examined the real retention crisis through the experiences of a group we call "the irreplaceables": teachers who are so successful that they are nearly impossible to replace. Teachers of this caliber provide more engaging learning experiences for students and help them achieve 5-6 more months of learning each year than students of low-performing teachers-academic results that can be life-changing. The irreplaceables sparked editorials from 8 of 10 of the nation's largest papers, reaching 14.1 million in positive circulation.we also published greenhouse schools, which surveyed thousands of teachers in 250 schools nationwide to identify high-performing "greenhouse schools"-those that keep more top teachers and get better results for students compared to schools that serve the same student populations. Greenhouse schools then shares what leaders at these schools were doing differently.finally, we strengthened our position as a national resource and advocate for teachers through the launch of our fishman prize. With the fishman prize, we recognized and publicized five excellent teachers with a $25,000 award and a place in a special summer residency program. The program spotlights great teaching and amplifies the voices of the nation's best educators. In addition to receiving one of the country's largest monetary awards for practicing teachers, fishman prize winners participate in a 6-week summer residency, to engage in various aspects of tntp's work, meet and discuss school reform with policymakers and education leaders, and collaborate with each other and with tntp staff to write and publish a short paper on a topic related to effective teaching.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENTA CRITICAL PART OF OUR WORK INCLUDES HELPING STATES BUILD, PILOT, AND IMPLEMENT RIGOROUS, FAIR, AND ACCURATE EDUCATOR EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS CENTERED ON HOW EDUCATORS ARE PERFORMING IN THEIR MOST CRITICAL ROLE: ADVANCING STUDENT LEARNING.

IRS990/Description0NEW TEACHER EFFECTIVENESSWE PARTNER WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND STATES TO ESTABLISH INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS THAT RECRUIT, SELECT, AND TRAIN TEACHERS. IN 2012, OUR TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAMS DREW MORE THAN 32,000 APPLICANTS NATIONWIDE. ONLY 13.8% OF THOSE APPLICANTS WERE SELECTED TO ENROLL IN TNTP ACADEMY, OUR TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM, MAKING OUR PROGRAMS COMPARABLE IN SELECTIVITY TO TOP U.S. UNIVERSITIES.TNTP ACADEMY TRAINS TEACHERS FOR HIGH-NEED STUDENTS THROUGH RIGOROUS, CLASSROOM-CENTERED TRAINING THAT IS LED BY MASTER TEACHERS AND SHARPLY FOCUSED ON STUDENT LEARNING. IT INCLUDES A PRE-SERVICE SUMMER TRAINING, A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING DURING TEACHERS' FIRST YEAR IN THE CLASSROOM THAT, AS OF 2012, INCLUDES AN EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION COMPONENT, AND AN ESSENTIALS REFRESHER COURSE FOR VETERAN OR LOW-PERFORMING TEACHERS.IN 2012, TNTP ACADEMY LAUNCHED OUR NEW PRE-SERVICE TEACHING TRAINING PROGRAM, FAST START, BASED ON YEARS OF ANALYSIS ON THOUSANDS OF TEACHERS. FAST START IS GROUNDED IN A SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL PREMISE: THE BEST WAY TO CULTIVATE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHING IS TO FIRST FIRMLY ESTABLISH A SOLID FOUNDATION. FAST START FOCUSES NEW TEACHERS ON THE MASTERY OF A SMALL NUMBER OF HIGH-LEVERAGE, ESSENTIAL TEACHING SKILLS THAT ARE PRE-REQUISITES FOR SUCCESS, ALLOWING THEM TO MOVE RAPIDLY TOWARD DEVELOPMENT OF MORE COMPLEX SKILLS. EARLY DATA FROM THOSE SITES CONFIRMS THAT DURING FAST START, TEACHERS SHOW SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT EARLY ON. DURING WEEK 1 OF THE TRAINING, ONLY 1% OF FAST START PARTICIPANTS EXHIBITED FAST START SKILLS, BUT BY THE FINAL OBSERVATION, NEARLY 60% OF THE PARTICIPANTS WERE RATED AS "DEVELOPING" IN 3 OF 4 FAST START SKILLS. THE DATA ALSO ESTABLISHED THAT FAST START SCREENS TEACHERS WELL-WHILE WE WERE PROUD TO RECOMMEND 67% OF PARTICIPANTS INTO THE CLASSROOM TO BEGIN THEIR CAREERS, FAST START HELPED 21% OF PARTICIPANTS SELF-SELECT OUT OF TEACHING, AND PROVIDED US WITH THE FRAMEWORK REQUIRED TO ENSURE THAT 12% OF STRUGGLING PARTICIPANTS DID NOT MAKE IT INTO A CLASSROOM. 1,777 NEW TEACHERS COMPLETED FAST START AND BEGAN TEACHING IN OUR NATION'S CLASSROOMS IN THE FALL OF 2012.IN 2012, TNTP ACADEMY ALSO LAUNCHED A CERTIFICATION COMPONENT VIA THE ASSESSMENT OF CLASSROOM EXCELLENCE SCREEN ("ACE"), WHICH EVALUATES TEACHERS DURING THEIR FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING AND DETERMINES-BASED ON MULTIPLE MEASURES THAT GAUGE SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM, INCLUDING CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS, PRINCIPAL RATINGS, STUDENT SURVEYS, AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT DATA-WHETHER THEY SHOULD BE RECOMMENDED FOR LICENSURE. IN ITS FIRST YEAR, WE EVALUATED 157 TEACHERS WITH ACE AND RECOMMENDED 87% OF THEM INTO THE CLASSROOM. TNTP IS THE FIRST PREPARATION PROVIDER IN THE COUNTRY TO SCREEN TEACHERS FOR DEMONSTRATED EFFECTIVENESS AT THIS SCALE.
