Activity 2

Educational outreach: the medicare rights center is an expert at translating the details of complicated federal medicare policies into consumer-friendly language, and conveying accurate messages to medicare beneficiaries through a variety of mechanisms. In fiscal year 2012, medicare rights led bilingual community presentations for consumers and professionals, offered online webinars to professionals nationwide, and expanded its seniors out speaking (sos) program, a peer-to-peer presentation model currently operational in new york, alabama, arkansas, florida, kansas, maine, maryland, and wisconsin. Last year, through trainings, workshops, and sos presentations, medicare rights directly reached over 65,500 individuals with good health coverage information. (see schedule o)medicare rights also maintained and increased usage of medicare interactive, its online educational resource that helps the 48 million people with medicare navigate the complex world of health insurance. Last year, medicare interactive received nearly 650,000 visits nationwide.

Activity 3

Enrollment services: the medicare rights center helps people with medicare who have limited incomes enroll in needed assistance programs, trains other organizations on how to more effectively screen and enroll their own clients in these public benefits, and advocates for reforms that would improve access to low-income programs for individuals in new york and nationwide. In fiscal year 2012, medicare rights expanded its enrollment services to directly enroll more individuals in needed programs, and provide technical assistance to other enrollment-focused organizations, in particular those with multilingual professionals who can reach a greater number of eligible beneficiaries. Medicare rights' direct enrollment work resulted in $6.2 million in savings to older adults and people with disabilities in the course of the year.
