Mission and Program Overview

Mission

As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the intrepid museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. The museum's mission is realized in three ways: 1) displaying collections and exhibitions that offer interpretations of american and global history; 2) providing innovative science, history and leadership programs for students; and 3) playing an integral role in the local and national community by hosting a wide range of public events for youth, families, senior citizens, veterans, and the men and women in service to our nation. The museum's mission is at the core of its strategic plan and guides all decision-making, whether programmatic, curatorial, operational or financial.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education:from may 1, 2011 through april, 30, 2012, over 24,500 students in grades k-12 participated in educator-led tours and workshops at the intrepid museum exploring cultural, science, and humanity themes. Educator-led tours and workshops focused on all aspects of the museum's exhibits and collections, and incorporated restored historic spaces, object-based learning techniques and inquiry methods. Programs align with state and national curriculum standards and are evaluated to document concept retention by students, grade and age appropriateness and student participation. The museum's education department began providing week-long series of teacher institutes at the intrepid for k-12 educators on a range of topics including aviation, marine science, space science and history. Varying by institute, programming included curator talks, tours of the museum and special exhibitions, adaptable teaching techniques on specific intrepid focused topics (i.e., history, aviation, water, space), interactive sharing of pedagogy, and lessons that can be modified for any classroom. The museum also held educator open houses for teachers during which they viewed temporary exhibitions, learned about the museum's education programs, participated in tours and activities, and received classroom materials.as a part of its off-site community-based programs, which included sessions at libraries, senior centers, veterans' homes and hospitals, the intrepid museum further expanded its collaborative efforts with new partnerships with such organizations as tuesday's children, which has an audience of children affected by the terrorist attacks of september 11th, and puppetry arts, a community based organization working with 20,000 children and families annually. Through these off-site programs at various community venues the museum reached 1,177 individuals. Programs took place during the weekdays and weekends and covered topics including code breaking, water testing, aviation, and space.the museum's programming also continued at select new york city hospitals for students who were hospitalized for chronic or acute medical, orthopedic and/or psychiatric conditions. This year, the intrepid's educators led programs for 228 students, of a wide range of ages, in varying hospital settings throughout nyc. Programs focused on aviation and the science of flight. Due to small group size, students had an opportunity to immerse themselves in content and receive extra attention, which was important for this audience. The intrepid's education department also hosted 5 events for families in transitional housing (children, adults and veterans) welcoming 710 children and adults to the museum. This year's events included a veterans' day event aligned with the exhibition of the dignity memorial vietnam wall, the museum's annual gift of giving event for families in transitional housing that incorporated dinner and celebration, a "meet and greet" with a former astronaut, and a special visit during the museum's kids week festivities.this year, the museum's educators provided distance learning programs, via video conferences, with students and adult groups at local locations throughout new york city and long island, nationally to virtual visitors in south carolina, ohio, and internationally to people in australia, germany, italy, and canada. The museum's education department also provided an extremely well attended (virtual attendance) professional development for teachers in california, illinois, indiana, maryland, new jersey, ohio, pennsylvania, tennessee, texas and ontario. The museum's access initiative provides resources and programming for visitors who are blind, partially-sighted, deaf or hard-of-hearing, or with emotional or cognitive challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities, continuing its mission to provide dynamic and engaging experiences for visitors with varying special needs. Over 1,050 people, adults and children, participate
Activity 3
Other public programming: the museum hosts nearly 70 days of public programming a year, bringing its mission to life. This fiscal year started with the museum's annual chol hamoed festival. Fleet week, in may 2011, the museum's most significant week-long, program filled event of the year, opened with its annual parade of ships on the hudson river and included military demonstrations, competitions and displays, special broadway and band performances, educational demonstrations and free movie screening on intrepid's flight deck. The museum's fleet week activities concluded with its memorial day ceremony honoring veterans and service men and women for their contributions to our nation. Historically, fleet week marks the official kickoff of the museum's annual summer salute to heroes - three months of public programming geared toward honoring our heroes, past and present, while inspiring those of the future. Summer salute to heroes of 2011 included firefighter and police appreciation weekends, coast guard and hometown heroes appreciation days. Intrepid's summer movie series and focus on history lecture series are just some of the examples of free public events offered throughout 2011 summer salute to heroes, in addition to free admission for coast guard, police, firefighters and other service members recognized and honored by the museum throughout the summer. Summer salute to heroes concluded on september 18, 2011 with the hometown heroes award ceremony. In october 2011, the museum organized its first ever disability awareness month with a goal of bringing together families, children and adults with varying special needs to celebrate the differences and raise awareness for better cultural experiences for everyone. Disability awareness month was organized for children and adults who are deaf of hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted, wounded warriors and veterans, and those affected by autism. The fall continued with two important and poignant ceremonies: veterans day and pearl harbor day. Intrepid museum's annual kids week coincides with presidents day and new york city public school's winter break, offering nine days of family friendly programming packed with theatrical shows, lectures, demonstrations, themed days, educational workshops, displays and presentations. In 2012 themed days and weekends were organized by the museum in partnership with ringling brothers, central park zoo, the us tennis association, among other partners, and included circus weekend, space & aviation, broadway and puppet days. In anticipation of space shuttle enterprise's arrival, 2012 kids week featured nasa interactive displays and programs, astronaut appearances, science demonstrations and presentations. All kids week activities are free with the purchase of general admission to the museum. In addition to all of these events, throughout the year, the museum sponsors many programs filled with educational and fun experiences for all ages that are open to the public. Museum services: intrepid's museum services team is always looking for new and innovative ways to expand and improve upon the museum visitor's experience. This has been achieved by developing new themed tours, continuous staff training and increased visitor interaction. Exhibit explainers are positioned at many historic spaces throughout the museum to provide our guests with an opportunity to learn about the history of the intrepid and the men that served on her. These spaces include anchor chain room, combat information center and navigation bridge among others. The exhibit explainers have been trained by senior tour guides and members of the museum's curatorial team to discuss the functions of the respective spaces, roles and experiences of crew members and intrepid's historic missions throughout her service. The museum's volunteers, many of whom are veterans and former crew members, offer a different perspective on intrepid's exhibits and artifacts, personalizing visitors' experiences

IRS990/Description0EXHIBITS & VISITOR SERVICES:THE INTREPID MUSEUM, AN EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT INSTITUTION CENTERED ON THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER INTREPID, IS DEDICATED TO PROMOTING THE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF HISTORY, SCIENCE AND SERVICE THROUGH ITS COLLECTIONS, EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMMING. FOUNDED IN 1982 AND DESIGNATED A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK IN 1986, THIS ICONIC MUSEUM IS NOW ONE OF THE LEADING CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS IN NEW YORK CITY. THE MUSEUM COMPLEX INCLUDES THE INTREPID ITSELF, A 900-FOOT-LONG RETIRED AIRCRAFT CARRIER THAT IS ONE OF TWENTY-FOUR SKYSCRAPER-SCALE ESSEX-CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIERS BUILT DURING WORLD WAR II AND THAT ALSO SERVED THROUGHOUT THE COLD WAR ERA UNTIL DECOMMISSIONED IN 1974, INCLUDING EARLY SPACE MISSIONS. THE COMPLEX ALSO INCLUDES THE BRITISH AIRWAYS CONCORDE, THE COLD WAR NUCLEAR MISSILE SUBMARINE GROWLER, OVER 20 INTERACTIVE EXHIBITIONS, A COLLECTION OF 30 WORLD WAR II AND COLD WAR ERA AIRCRAFT, FIVE MULTI-MEDIA PRESENTATIONS AND AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS. THE MUSEUM'S HISTORICAL VALUE WAS RECOGNIZED BY NASA IN APRIL 2011, WHEN THE INTREPID MUSEUM WAS NAMED AS THE NEW HOME FOR AMERICA'S FIRST SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE, TO PERPETUATE THE LEGACY OF ONE OF OUR COUNTRY'S GREATEST TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS. FISCAL YEAR 2012 WAS A YEAR OF PLANNING AND PREPARATION FOR THE TRANSPORTATION OF ENTERPRISE WITH A SCHEDULED OPENING OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE EXHIBIT IN JULY 2012. ENTERPRISE ARRIVED IN NEW YORK CITY AT JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JFK) ON APRIL 27, 2012 PIGGYBACKED ON NASA'S SCA, A BOEING 747. THE ADDITION OF THE ENTERPRISE TO THE MUSEUM COMPLEX PRESENTS AN UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO BROADEN THE REACH AND BREADTH OF THE MUSEUM'S EXHIBITIONS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS OF SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, AND INNOVATORS. THE SPACE SHUTTLE COMPLETES THE INTREPID MUSEUM'S COLLECTION OF MAJOR TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN SEA, AIR AND SPACE AND ESTABLISHES THE MUSEUM AS A FOCAL POINT IN NEW YORK AND THROUGHOUT THE NORTHEAST UNITED STATES FOR INTERPRETING THE IMPORTANCE OF NASA TO BOTH THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN AVIATION AND THE HISTORY OF SPACEFLIGHT. ENTERPRISE WILL SERVE AS AN EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM TO UNDERSTAND NASA'S ROLE IN THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM). THE NEW SPACE SHUTTLE EXHIBIT WILL ENABLE THE MUSEUM TO EXPAND ITS INTERPRETATION OF THE "HUMANITY BEHIND THE HARDWARE"- THE PEOPLE WHO CREATED AND OPERATED THAT TECHNOLOGY - TO SPACE VEHICLES. THE ACQUISITION OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE ALSO ACTED AS A CATALYST TO ACQUIRE OTHER SPACE RELATED ARTIFACTS THIS PAST YEAR, INCLUDING THE LONG-TERM LOAN OF A SOYUZ TMA-6 RE-ENTRY CAPSULE. THIS IMPORTANT ARTIFACT OF SPACE HISTORY WAS LOANED TO THE MUSEUM BY GREG OLSEN, RESEARCH SCIENTIST AND ENTREPRENEUR AND THE THIRD SELF-FUNDED PRIVATE CITIZEN TO ORBIT THE EARTH IN THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. HE RETURNED TO EARTH FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IN OCTOBER 2005 IN THIS CAPSULE. IN PREPARATION FOR THESE UPCOMING AEROSPACE EXHIBITIONS, THE MUSEUM IMPLEMENTED A NEW PLAN FOR DISPLAYING THE COLD WAR-JET AGE AIRCRAFT ON INTREPID'S FLIGHT DECK INTO THEMATIC GROUPINGS TIED TO HISTORIC EVENTS. IMPLEMENTING THE NEW INTERPRETIVE DISPLAY ALSO INVOLVED DE-ACCESSIONING OF THREE AIRCRAFT THAT WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE EMPIRE STATE AERO SCIENCES MUSEUM IN SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK. THE PLAN ALSO MADE IT POSSIBLE TO ACCOMMODATE THE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE ON THE FLIGHT DECK FOR A JULY 2012 EXHIBITION OPENING. CONCURRENT WITH THESE STRATEGIC ACQUISITIONS AND NEW DISPLAY PLANS, THE MUSEUM EXHIBITS AND CURATORIAL PROFESSIONALS CONTINUED WORKING ON A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT PROJECTS IN FY 2012.1. THE UNVEILING OF THE RESTORED F9F COUGAR DURING FLEET WEEK IN MAY 2011 WAS THE CULMINATION OF THE MUSEUM'S COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENNIAL OF NAVAL AVIATION. 2. WITH FUNDING PROVIDED BY THE INSTITUTE FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES, THE INTREPID'S TEAM OF EXHIBIT PROFESSIONALS HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP A COMPR
