Mission and Program Overview

Mission

As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the intrepid museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. The museum's mission is realized in three ways: 1) displaying collections and exhibitions that offer interpretations of american and global history; 2) providing innovative science, history and leadership programs for students; and 3) playing an integral role in the local and national community by hosting a wide range of public events for youth, families, senior citizens, veterans, and the men and women in service to our nation. The museum's mission is at the core of its strategic plan and guides all decision-making, whether programmatic, curatorial, operational or financial.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education programs:as a former aircraft carrier, the intrepid provides a natural platform from which science, history and engineering concepts can be explored, and character and leadership skills be developed and honed. Education programs explore a range of topics including science, engineering, technology, aviation, space, and math, as well as central themes of life at sea, popular culture, leadership and environmental studies. Moreover, having sailed the seas throughout the world, the intrepid is a fitting location from which to learn about social studies, geography and history. The intrepid and its aircraft are powerful examples of technological inventions and engineering feats; the museum's restored spaces highlight crew members' experiences on the ship while in service and how the intrepid was truly a "city at sea,". The intrepid served as a prime recovery vessel for nasa in the 1960s, recovering scott carpenter and his mercury capsule, as well as gus grissom and john young after their gemini 3 mission and is poised to increase awareness of space science.the museum's educational programming has long been at the core of intrepid's mission and continues to welcome more than 200,000 youth annually, with almost 50,000 youth and students participating science and history educational programs each year, of which nearly 30,000 are covered by grant funding. The intrepid has delivered high quality educational programming to tens of thousands of students and teachers for more 20 years. Programs are delivered via interdisciplinary museum visits that introduce and reinforce skill building in literacy, science applications, research, and leadership. The intrepid museum's team of educators holds masters degrees in museum education, museum studies, history, environmental studies, geology, marine science, and elementary, secondary, bilingual education and special education, and provides content expertise in the development and delivery of programs. This level of professionalism, combined with the museum's exhibitions, provides a solid learning platform for inquiry-based experiences, grade appropriate lessons, and hands-on activities. Each museum educator is also trained in verbal description, touch-tour skills and other educational techniques for engaging audiences with physical, emotional or cognitive challenges. As schools continue to be challenged with budget cuts, out-of school programming is a much-needed resource for educating students about science, technology, engineering and math. Museums and the hands-on learning opportunities they provide can be the catalyst that sparks a young person's lifelong exploration of science, technology, engineering and math (stem). It is critical that formal educational and cultural organizations collaborate to maintain high quality programming to supplement curriculum, spark interest and promote student growth. Accordingly, the intrepid museum's education programs are structured to parallel new york state and national curriculum standards in the areas of science, social studies, math, english, and language arts, with a special focus on the stem curriculum. Students are encouraged to observe, discover, hypothesize, and engage in hands-on experiences. Intrepid's programs are designed to impact k-12th grade students from title i eligible schools, whose populations are considered low-income or underserved. Museum educators combine science and history instruction with mentorship, bringing programs to diverse audiences on and off the ship, including students confined to hospitals and living in transitional housing and homeless shelters, on-ship programs throughout the school year, intensive summer camp programs, and programs for visitors and students affected by physical (blind, low vision, deaf, hard of hearing, mobility) disabilities, and developmental and emotional disabilities, including autism. The museum's education programs offer visitors - young and old alike - the opportunity to explore restored
Activity 3
Fleet weekin partnership with new york city and the united states armed forces, the museum continues to serve as the hub of the annual fleet week celebration, hosting a week-long series of activities and special events to commemorate america's service men and women as well as visiting soldiers and sailors from other nations - all at no cost to the service men and women. In may 2010, the museum hosted the 24th annual fleet week at intrepid. Nearly a dozen military vessels from the us navy, us coast guard, us army and canadian forces visited new york harbor during fleet week and were open to the public for free tours. Throughout the week, the museum hosted numerous events on its pier, free of charge, to the public. These events included military displays and demonstrations, performances from broadway shows, military bands and other entertainers and athletic competitions between the visiting ships' crews.the week culminates with an inspirational memorial day ceremony on intrepid's flight deck, which includes a military fly-over, the playing of echo taps and a 21-gun salute. The highlight of the ceremony is the unfurling of a 100-foot american flag by active military and assisted by veterans from world war ii to present, including many of intrepid's own former crew members.fleet week is among the museum's most high-profile and busiest times of the year, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to the event that is called "america's premiere thank you" to its armed forces.

INTREPID WAS ONE OF WORLD WAR II'S MOST SUCCESSFUL AND BATTLE-TESTED SHIPS, AND IS NOW A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK. THE EXHIBITS AND STORIES PRESENTED RELATE TO THE INTREPIDS SERVICE TO HER COUNTRY, SPANNING MORE THAN THREE DECADES OF ACTIVE DUTY, AND THE MEN WHO SERVED ABOARD HER AND INTREPID'S NEARLY THIRTY YEARS OF SERVICE AS A MUSEUM. THE MUSEUM COMPLEX INCLUDES THE 900-FOOT LONG AIRCRAFT CARRIER INTREPID WITH FOUR OF ITS SEVEN DECKS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC; THE COMPLETELY RENOVATED FORMER USS GROWLER (SSG-577), A GRAYBACK CLASS SUBMARINE AND THE ONLY COLD WAR ERA, GUIDED MISSILE SUBMARINE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD; AND AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF OVER 30 RESTORED AIRCRAFT INCLUDING TWO OF THE FASTEST PLANES IN THE WORLD -- THE A12 BLACKBIRD AND THE BRITISH AIRWAYS CONCORDE. VISITORS CAN EXPERIENCE MANY AREAS OF THE INTREPID INCLUDING THE FO'C'SLE (THE FORECASTLE, HOUSING JUNIOR OFFICER QUARTERS AND THE ANCHOR CHAIN ROOM), RESTORED ENLISTED BERTHING AND MESS ON THE THIRD DECK AND MARINE BERTHING AND VARIOUS SPACES OF THE ISLAND AND COMBAT INFORMATION CENTER. THE MUSEUM'S AIRCRAFT RESTORATION EFFORTS ARE ONGOING AND INCLUDE THE RECENT REPAINTING OF TWO AIRCRAFT IN THE COLLECTION, THE E-1B TRACER AND F.1 SCIMITAR, AND ITS MOST CHALLENGING AVIATION RESTORATION TO DATE -- THE F9F COUGAR. IN FY 2011 THIS ARTIFACT WAS OFFICIALLY UNVEILED AS PART OF THE MUSEUMS CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENNIAL OF NAVAL AVIATION. MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS GIVE VISITORS AN INSIDE LOOK AT LIFE ABOARD AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER AT SEA AND FOCUS ON AREAS OF GEO-POLITICAL AND SOCIETAL CONDITIONS, TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AND MILITARY HISTORY IN RELATION TO INDIVIDUAL STORIES - THE HUMANITY BEHIND THE HARDWARE -- EXPLORING SERVICE BY PRESENTING ARTIFACTS THAT DEPICT THE OPERATION OF THE INTREPID AS A COMMUNITY AT SEA, THE PLACE OF THE SHIP IN WORLD HISTORY, AND THE SHIP AND ITS CREW MEMBERS IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL EVENTS. IN ADDITION TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER, THE SUBMARINE, AND ITS AIRCRAFT, THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS INCLUDE MILITARY UNIFORMS AND GEAR, ARCHIVAL MATERIALS (SUCH AS, PHOTOS, DIARIES, BOOKS, LETTERS, MAPS AND DOCUMENTS), HISTORIC MEMORABILIA AND ARTIFACTS THAT ADDRESS THE EDUCATIONAL THEMES OF THE MUSEUM AND TELL THE STORIES OF THOSE WHO SERVED. IN APRIL 2011, NASA ANNOUNCED THAT THE INTREPID MUSEUM WAS THE RECIPIENT OF ONE OF THE FOUR RETIRING SPACE SHUTTLES, THE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE, WHICH IS THE PROTOTYPE FOR THE SPACE SHUTTLES THAT FOLLOWED. THE MUSEUM WAS ONE OF MORE THAN TWENTY MUSEUMS COMPETING NATIONALLY FOR ONE OF THESE MAJOR HISTORIC ARTIFACTS. MUSEUM PLANS ARE ACTIVELY UNDERWAY FOR ITS TEMPORARY DISPLAY COMMENCING IN MID FY 2012 AND ITS PERMANENT INSTALLATION IN FALL 2014.THE MUSEUM'S EXHIBITS AND CURATORIAL STAFF CONTINUED TO REFINE BEST-PRACTICES IN FY 2011 AND EXPANDED ITS CROSS-DEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEES FOR PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND EXHIBITS, ENHANCING THE PROACTIVE INTEGRATION OF EXHIBIT PLANNING, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND CURRICULA REQUIREMENTS AND VISITOR SERVICES. THE MUSEUM'S TOUR GUIDES, FLOOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS, SOME OF WHOM ARE INTREPID'S FORMER CREW MEMBERS, ENHANCE THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE AND BRING ITS STORIES ALIVE BY ADDING HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT, TELLING ANECDOTES LEARNED FROM THE MEN WHO SERVED ABOARD THE INTREPID, THE GROWLER AND SOME OF THE AIRCRAFT ON DISPLAY. DURING THE YEAR THE EXHIBITS DEPARTMENT INITIATED DAILY POSTS CALLED "TODAY ON THE INTREPID", HIGHLIGHTING IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE SHIP'S HISTORY, AND MONTHLY CURATORIAL TOURS FOR MUSEUM STAFF MEMBERS PRESENTING A DIFFERENT TOPIC EACH MONTH; AND THE AIRCRAFT CURATOR IMPLEMENTED A "MEET THE PILOTS" DISCUSSION SERIES THAT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL WITH VISITORS BY GIVING THEM FIRST-HAND ACCOUNTS AND REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES OF PILOTS WHO FLEW THE AIRCRAFT IN THE MUSEUM
