“Over the past four decades, creative time has commissioned and presented ambitious public art projects with thousands of artists throughout new york city, across the country, around the world and now even in outer space. Our work is guided by three core values: art matters, artists' voices are important in shaping society, and public spaces are places for creative and free expression. We are acclaimed for the innovative and meaningful projects we have commissioned, from tribute in light, the twin beacons of light that illuminated lower manhattan six months after 9/11, to bus ads promoting hiv awareness, to paul chan's production of waiting for godot in new orleans, and much more. In partnership with a variety of well-known cultural institutions and community groups, we have commissioned art in unique landmark sites from the brooklyn bridge anchorage, times square, rockefeller center, governors island, and the high line, to neglected urban treasures like the lower east side's historic essex street market, coney island, and new orleans's lower 9th ward. We are committed to presenting important art for our times and engaging broad audiences that transcend geographic, racial, and socioeconomic barriers.”

“In 2019, creative time produced three major programs designed to inform, entertain and educate the general public. Dedicated to amplifying the voices of early-career artists, creative time ambitiously launched its first ever open call for emerging artists that yielded over 630 applications from all five boroughs. From those applications, creative time's staff and a selection committee comprised of board members and past collaborators adjudicated a short list and selected risa puno's project, "the privilege of escape". Co-presented with onassis usa, "the privilege of escape" was risa puno's largest installation to date. Referencing escape rooms-immersive environments where groups solve a series of hands-on puzzles against the clock-this project distilled the complexity of privilege by placing it in context of a thrilling game. For eight weeks during the summer of 2019, "the privilege of escape" attracted over 3000 attendees and earned a coveted spot on the cover of the new york times arts section on july 24th, 2019. In the fall, creative time worked with the legendary artist, jenny holzer, to present "vigil", a series of light projections of testimonies, responses, and poems written by people confronting the everyday reality of gun violence in america. Set in the middle of rockefeller center, the texts were cast onto the iconic buildings surrounding the plaza for three nights only from october 10th to 12th. An estimated 150 thousand pedestrians and passersby experienced the project. Additionally, the organization hit a huge milestone by celebrating the tenth anniversary of the creative time summit-an annual international conference for artists and activists working at the intersection of art and politics. Luminaries from across the nation and globe joined together in the historic great hall at cooper union over three days to discuss the shifting nature of truth in art, media, technology, and other forms. This anniversary summit was one of the most robust with over 1,000 attendees who actively participated in discussions, dinners, and workshops throughout the city, with 15% of tickets provided free of charge. Commemorating the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the summit, the organization proudly released making another world possible: 10 creative time summits, 10 global issues, 100 art projects, edited by corina l. Apostol and nato thompson and published by routledge. This three-part book surveys socially engaged cultural practices that address the urgencies of contemporary social movements.”
