Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The fund for peace is an independent, nonpartisan research and educational organization that works to prevent violent conflict and promote sustainable security. It promotes sustainable security through research, training and education, engagement of civil society, building bridges across diverse sectors, and developing innovative technologies and tools for policy makers. A leader in the conflict assessment and early warning field, the fund for peace focuses on the problems of weak and failing states. Its objective is to create practical tools and approaches for conflict mitigation that are useful to decision-makers.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Sustainable development: as part of its efforts to promote sustainable security, the fund for peace works on issues surrounding the broad theme of sustainable development. In its work with the human rights & business roundtable, the ffp seeks to address issues related to businesses operating in conflict zones focusing, in large part, on the development of programs and policies that increase transparency, respect for the rule of law, open societies, and economic growth in some of the worlds most sensitive areas. In connections with this program, the ffp created the better business for better communities program, in which the organization partners directly with companies or other non-governmental organizations to work directly with communities and security forces in conflict-sensitive areas to improve human security, thus promoting economic development. In order to fund this work, the companies reimburse ffp for time and expenses and this is reported as consulting revenue. The ffp provides information about its activities and support to the international community including corporations, development organizations, aid agencies, international finance institutions and nongovernmental agencies to promote peace through dialogue and action.
Activity 3
Foreign policy: the threat convergence project supports an interdisciplinary research approach with conferences and reports to generate policy recommendations aligned with the following objectives: foster closer research collaboration among experts in the three fields of wmd proliferation, global terrorism, and weak and failing states; produce fresh approaches on illicit transnational networks in and across weak and failing states or ungoverned spaces, and linkages among these networks and the potential buyers and sellers of wmd; make specific policy recommendations to thwart the threat of wmd proliferation through such networks; and present the findings and recommendations to policy makers and engage them in developing new approaches to nonproliferation strategies.

IN ADDITION, THE FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT AND COMPARABILITY DATA IS USED.
