IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0AFRICA PROGRAMS: WORLD EDUCATION INC.'S AFRICA DIVISION SUPPORTS A VARIETY OF EDUCATION PROGRAMMING IN UGANDA, GHANA, MOZAMBIQUE, COTE D'IVOIRE, BENIN, AND MALI. THESE PROGRAMS INVOLVE BOTH FORMAL EDUCATION AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION SUPPORT AND SERVE BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN AS WELL AS THE MINISTRIES THAT OVERSEE THEIR WELL-BEING AND EDUCATION PROVISION. AFRICA DIVISION'S FORMAL EDUCATION SUPPORT INCLUDES TEACHER TRAINING IN EARLY GRADE READING AND MATH, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, BILINGUAL LITERACY, AND COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION THROUGH CAPACITY BUILDING OF PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATIONS/SCHOOL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES. THE NON-FORMAL EDUCATION WORK USUALLY INVOLVES THE PROVISION OF FUNCTIONAL LITERACY TO OUT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN OR ILLITERATE ADULTS SO THAT THEY CAN EITHER ACCESS FORMAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES OR BETTER INCOME GENERATION OPPORTUNITIES. THE CORNERSTONE OF MUCH OF OUR WORK IS OUR SENSITIVITY TO AND PURPOSEFUL INTEGRATION OF GENDER ISSUES, SPECIFICALLY AROUND WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT AND GIRL'S ACCESS TO EDUCATION.
