Mission

Leap empowers low and moderate income people by helping them gain access to living-wage employment opportunities and career paths. We seek to develop programs that counter prevailing market inequalities and contribute to a broader movement for economic justice.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Brooklyn woods:brooklyn woods (bw) has been training low-income new yorkers as skilled woodworkers since 1999. Bw teaches shop production, wood technology, finishing techniques, cabinet installation, mechanical drawing, and the safe use and proper care of hand and power tools, along with soft skills and contextualized job readiness, in a custom-built woodworking shop. Graduates are placed in jobs at large and small woodworking shops, construction and home renovation companies, home improvement stores and real estate property management firms. In fy2012 bw enrolled 45 individuals, graduated 82% of them, and placed 76% of graduates in jobs with an average starting salary of $11.42 an hour.
Activity 3
Nycha resident training academy, caretaker training program - bwis newest program, the new york city housing authority (nycha) resident training academy (nrta) program, trains public housing residents for employment with nycha and its vendors. Training combines job readiness and workplace safety with hands-on skills training and practice in specific sectors. In fy2012, the program enrolled 228 public housing residents and graduated 212 (93%) of these beneficiaries. Of those, 203 (96% of graduates) have been placed into jobs with nycha paying an average of $13.01 per hour, with excellent benefits and opportunities for career advancement.
