Activity 2

Cap social workers provided weekly peer leadership training to 70 high school and middle school students to teach the monthly pulaski street prevention/education program. Cap also provided monthly training to 24 community volunteers to teach the program. Peer leaders either assisted the volunteers or the more experienced peer leaders each month. Cap also provided a full day alcohol prevention workshop for 29 middle school peer leaders in which 12 high school peer leaders facilitated group activates, and a two day summer workshop for 35 additional incoming middle school peer leaders with four high school peer leaders who facilitated activities.

Activity 3

Cap social workers provided individual, group, and family counseling as well as significant crisis intervention services to 163 students in riverhead high school, middle school and 2 elementary schools. At least 80% of the students who continued with individual, group or family counseling, or who were seen for crisis intervention, showed improvement in one or more measurable areas. The role of school based prevention counseling is to address risk factors for future substance abuse and to teach students to utilize appropriate coping strategies.
