Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Mercy haven's mission is to acknowledge the dignity and potential of people who are homeless, living with mental illness or living in poverty by providing housing, advocacy, education and life skills development.

From a humble beginning in Bay Shore in 1985 as a provider of housing for adults living with mental illness, our housing programs now also include the elderly, limited income families with children as well as persons with special needs and veterans. Mercy Haven has grown throughout its 39 years to become a multifaceted community resource. we have brought services to both Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York and are dedicated members of the communities we serve. in addition to the housing programs described in part III of this form, Mercy Haven operates the following programs: Pleasant gardens adult home provides a home and personal care for 26 older adults who are unable to live independently. Pleasant gardens is licensed by new York state department of health and provides residents with services that include cooking, cleaning, laundry service, and medication management that are provided by staff who are on-site 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Visits from a medical doctor and oth

the yearly audit draft is presented to the audit and finance committee of the board. as part of this process, the committee addresses the independent auditors with no staff present. after having satisfactorily answered the committee's questions, the auditors issue final audited financial statements. the form 990 is prepared by the independent auditors based on information from the audited financial statements. the form 990 is reviewed by management and distributed to the Board of Directors prior to filing with the IRS. the form is filed and the final copy of the audit and form 990 are posted on a document portal for all audit and compliance committee members to access.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

all board members and employees are required on an annual basis and in addition anytime the policy is updated to review and sign the current policy.

the executive committee of the board of directors does a yearly evaluation of the executive director and upon compliance with goals set by the previous year and the data gathered, the compensation offered to the executive director is determined. the executive director does the same for the associate executive director and brings that to the executive committee for their approval.

the director of human resources is responsible for preparing a comparative study of salaries and compensation on a yearly basis. this information is given to the associate executive director in determining salaries and compensation packages for staff. this information is then presented to the executive director for final approval.

IRS990/Desc0mercy haven's supported housing program, known as hearth, is the largest component of our housing with 273 residents, including 93 children in 2024. hearth offers permanent housing with varying levels of support that are based on the needs of the individual or family. staff members known as housing specialists visit our residents a minimum of once per month to provide resources and support with tasks such as budgeting, establishing community support, job readiness evaluation and health management. in 2024, 96% of mercy haven's residents had maintained stable housing for 6 months or more.
