Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) promotes and defends accurate and effective science education, because everyone deserves to engage with the evidence. NCSE is a not-for-profit, membership organization that helps ensure students across the country receive an accurate and effective evolution and climate science education. We do this by supporting teachers with resources and best teaching practices; through community outreach led by dedicated volunteers delivering hands-on, engaging science activities; and by monitoring and mobilizing against efforts to undermine science education, whether at the statehouse or in the classroom. Our members are scientists, teachers, and citizens with diverse political affiliations.

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) is a not-for-profit, membership organization providing information and resources for schools, parents, and concerned citizens working to keep evolution and climate science in public school science education. We educate the press and public about the scientific and educational aspects of controversies surrounding the teaching of evolution and climate change, and supply needed information and advice to defend good science education at local, state, and national levels. Our 5000 members are scientists, teachers, clergy, and citizens with diverse religious and political affiliations.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

NCSE has designated a portion of its unrestricted net assets as a general endowment fund to support the mission of the Organization. Since the endowment resulted from an internal designation and is not donor-restricted, it is classified and reported as unrestricted net assets. Each year, the Organization is authorized to withdraw up to 5% of the average balance of the stock and securities portfolio investment account over the prior three years. (Market value to be determined as of the last business day of the preceding year for the organization's operating purposes.) The dollar amount and timing of any distribution(s) from the investment account will be left up to the discretion of the Executive Director and the Treasurer.

IRS990/Desc0In 2016, NCSE pursued its effortsto counter the effect of science denial on the classroom, including organizing opposition to legislation and policies aimed at undermining the integrity of evolution and/or climate change education in eight states. NCSE Teacher support:Established in 2015, NCSEteach has grown into a national network of nearly 6000 science teachers in all fifty states. NCSEteach provides teachers with opportunities to learn from one another, access to vetted resources for teaching evolution and climate change, and advice on how best to address controversy in the classroom.Teachers are reached through monthly e-newsletters and blogs addressing topical issues. We also met with hundreds of teachers at national workshops, and conferences including NABT and the NSTA.In the summer of 2016, over 600 teachers received training on dealing with controversial topics through workshops provided by NCSE partnering organizations. Scientist in the Classroom: Piloted in the fall of 2015 the Scientist in the Classroom has now paired nearly 150 classroom teachers with local scientists to collaborate on classroom presentations and activities, benefitting over 3,000 students. Science Booster Clubs:Also piloted in 2015, Science Booster Clubs were established in Iowa to provide a framework for community members to rally in support of local science education. There are now four clubs in Iowa with over 1000 members. The clubs have provided informal, hands-on climate change and evolution outreach events reaching nearly 60,000 local citizens. Micro-grants have been provided to 12 teachers, benefitting over 4,200 students. The program is organized as a research project with IRB approval through the University of Iowa with the aim of measuring the impact of the program on community acceptance of and familiarity with climate change and evolution science. Early results show rising science literacy in communities with four or more club activities in a year. In 2017, the Science Booster Club program is expanding into the rest of Iowa and supporting 12-volunteer-run clubs in 10 additional states. NCSE Providing Information: NCSE continues to provide information to teachers, parents, the press and the general public about current events related to the creation/evolution and climate change controversies. NCSE's outreach is national, with additional impact worldwide. NCSE staff delivered lectures, workshops, and presentations: participated in public media presentations (radio, podcasts, webinars): and provided consulting services to many teaching and scientific organizations. NCSE exhibited at several annual meetings of national and state scientific and educational societies. Executive Director, Ann Reid, serves on numerous advisory boards including for the Smithsonian Institution and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Research Director Emily Schoerning was elected in 2016 to the Board of Directors ofthe National Science Teacher Association asDivision Director of Research in Science Education. The Reports of NCSE (our quarterly newsletter) reached over 4000 homes. Our weekly informational e-blast reached over 6000 subscribers. We counted over 170,000 Facebook fans and 9208 Twitter followers. NCSEs YouTube channel logged over 1,928,556,000 video views.
