Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To empower youth, in partnership with adults, to create community change.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Healthy Vessels: The Healthy Vessels program of YES! is a faith-based youth advocacy program designed to prevent childhood obesity in five counties in North Carolina: Anson, Robeson, Richmond, Montgomery and Scotland. The Healthy Vessels program staffs four part-time youth leaders to develop all curriculums, training materials and provide technical assistance to the five local youth teams. The Healthy Vessels program provides technical assistance to its partner counties to help them develop an understanding of youth empowerment and its impact on adolescent fitness and nutrition. This year, the team facilitated a national webinar for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on youth engagement; developed Nutrition 101, Physical Activity 101, Media Literacy, Youth Advocacy and Obesity 101 Trainings; and developed faith-based youth resources for the Fresh, the movie. In addition, the Healthy Vessels youth team created and implemented the Fit for Your Community environmental assessment tool. The participating youth groups assessed their environments and developed strategies for addressing their unique community challenges. The result was the adoption of 5 Eat Smart, Move More NC nutrition and physical activity policies in churches; the creation of 1 new community garden on church grounds (which gained positive news coverage); a sustainable walking guide for Hamlet, NC; and an overall decrease in fast food consumption in communities served. The assessment tool was shared with participants of the Southern Obesity Summit in Atlanta, GA, Alliance for a Healthier Generation and other organizations looking to use or replicate this tool for youth advocacy efforts. The Healthy Vessels program and the Youth Empowerment Model are being considered for replication in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and Georgia. Lastly, Healthy Vessels has increased its visibility through online social media, and has started a video campaign on Facebook called, Define Yourself, Define Your Food.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Action Now!: Action Now! is the newest YES! program that advocates for school-based health centers in Wake County. Per the program's grantor, John Rex Endowment, the Action Now! team began its fiscal year by critically analyzing 32 recommendations put forth by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine Adolescent Health Task Force. The Action Now! group concluded that establishing a school-based health center would have the largest impact on young people in the community. The program is developing a plan to advocate to the North Carolina General Assembly for appropriated funds to support school-based health services in Wake County; as well, it is working to make the public aware that the county has not met the recommended statewide ratio of 1 school nurse per 750 middle and high school students. Action Now! has five youth staff who work alongside the program director and communications manager. In preparation for the work ahead, Action Now! is engaged in the training and strategic planning phase of their two-year plan. The youth and adult staff participated in the School Health Centers 101 training facilitated by the North Carolina School Community Health Alliance (NCSCHA). During the training, the team had the opportunity to learn about school health centers and develop tactics for moving forward. Action Now! is working to establish partnerships with key community stakeholders in support of the establishment of a school-based health center in Wake County. The program intends to grow its social media presence and develop relationships with local news media to support its public awareness campaign in Wake County.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1Other Services: This fiscal year, YES! provided a variety of different trainings, resources and services to clients in need of expertise on youth empowerment and advocacy. Services provided for a fee included:Trainings and Technical Support: YES! has executed several trainings related to underage drinking prevention for communities not funded by NC PUD. These trainings included youth empowerment and youth recruitment for adults and trainings for youth who want to learn to be effective advocates in preventing underage drinking work. Organizational Assessment: The Organizational Assessment is a tool designed in June 2010 by a graduated youth staff and an adult staff of YES!. The tool allows YES! staff to conduct a review of the application of the Youth Empowerment Model in various aspects of a youth-serving organization. Upon review, YES! makes solid recommendations for an organization's board and staff that will improve their ability to effectively engage young people and maximize their contributions to the organization. The assessment process is co-facilitated by YES! adult and youth staff, and is based on a compilation of survey datasets relating to every aspect of the organization. In June 2010, Wake Teen Medical Services received an assessment grant that allowed them to take advantage of this YES! service. Wake Teen's board, staff, marketing materials, and service and program offerings were analyzed. A unique contract with North Carolina Child Response Initiative (NCCRI) allowed for YES! to be a part of a grant selection committee for capacity-building of substance abuse coalitions in communities across NC.
