Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Yonkers partners in education (ypie) partners with students to ensure they are ready for, enroll in, and complete college. We confront the challenges of low-income urban school districts by providing families with equitable access to the critical tools and services necessary for college success. Ypie has put a college degree and careers within reach for thousands of underrepresented, first-generation students. Ypie provides its proven model to high school and college students from yonkers, ny, jersey city, nj, and nashville, tn.

Ypie's mission is to increase the number of yonkers public school students who complete a post-secondary program that prepares them for a successful career.

IRS990/Desc0YPIE SCHOLARSTHE YPIE SCHOLARS PROGRAM IS A FOUR YEAR PROGRAM BEGINNING IN 9TH GRADE. THESE STUDENTS ARE RECRUITED FROM ACROSS ALL EIGHT OF THE YONKERS PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS. THIS YEAR WE COMPLETED OUR FOURTH YEAR AND GRADUATED OUR FIRST YPIE SCHOLARS IN JUNE 2017. OUR GOAL IS THAT YPIE SCHOLARS WILL GRADUATE FROM A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE WITHIN 6 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES THREE MAJOR SUPPORTS TO SCHOLARS: ACADEMIC PREPARATION AND ENRICHMENT AT THE AFTERSCHOOL YPIE COLLEGE ZONE , LIFE COACHING FROM ADULT MENTORS, COLLEGE PERSISTENCE COACHING AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL.ONE OF THE MOST RIGOROUS EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL YPIE SCHOLARS IS THAT THEY ATTEND THE YPIE COLLEGE ZONE A MINIMUM OF TWO DAYS PER WEEK FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE HOURS PER DAY FROM OCTOBER - JUNE. DURING THESE AFTERSCHOOL SESSIONS STUDENTS ROTATE TO MULTIPLE LEARNING STATIONS TO RECEIVE ACADEMIC TUTORING, HOMEWORK HELP, LITERACY SUPPORT, AND ENRICHMENT. YPIE SCHOLARS CAN PARTICIPATE IN A FIVE WEEK ACADEMIC BOOT CAMP OVER THE SUMMER AT THE YPIE COLLEGE ZONE. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS MEET TWO TIMES PER MONTH WITH THEIR YPIE GRADUATION COACH, A TRAINED ADULT WHO PROVIDES COACHING AND SUPPORT FOR A SCHOLAR'S FULL FOUR YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL. UPON GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL, YPIE SCHOLARS WILL BEGIN WORKING WITH A YPIE PERSISTENCE COACH TO SUPPORT THEM AS THEY TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND SUCCEED IN COLLEGE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0YPIE FELLOWS BEGINNING IN 11TH GRADE, THE YPIE FELLOWS PROGRAM PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE ACCESS AND PERSISTENCE SERVICES TO APPROXIMATELY 600 STUDENTS EACH YEAR. OUR GOAL IS THAT EACH STUDENT WILL GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE WITHIN 6 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. YPIE FELLOWS RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM YPIE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE. DURING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL WORK WITH A YPIE COLLEGE ADVISOR ON ALL PARTS OF THE APPLICATION AND FINANCIAL AID PROCESS. UPON GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL, YPIE FELLOWS WILL BEGIN WORKING WITH A YPIE PERSISTENCE COACH TO SUPPORT THEM AS THEY TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND SUCCEED IN COLLEGE. THE PROGRAM ENSURES THAT EVERY YPIE FELLOW ATTAINS THE REQUIREMENTS, ADMISSION SKILLS, AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES NECESSARY FOR ADMISSION TO COLLEGES THAT MATCH THEIR INTERESTS, ABILITIES AND FINANCIAL CAPACITY. THE PROGRAM THEN SUPPORTS STUDENTS WHEN THEY ARRIVE ON CAMPUS BY PROVIDING COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE TO HELP THEM NAVIGATE COURSE REGISTRATION, GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS, ACADEMIC CHALLENGES, SOCIAL SITUATIONS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT COMES WITH BEING AN INDEPENDENT COLLEGE STUDENT. WHILE THERE ARE NO GPA REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION, STUDENTS MUST DEMONSTRATE THROUGH THEIR APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW A COMMITMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE.
