Mission

To increase the knowledge and use of technology of urban families, preparing them for success in a constantly changing digital society. We use the resources of technology to:1. Further digital learning for children through the use of measurable programs.2. Provide free computers to families that do not have a working computer at home.3. Provide basic computer training for adults to develop job skills to improve financial independence.

TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTER TRAINING:TECHNOLOGY & COMPUTER TRAINING (TCT) PROGRAM, WORKS TO CLOSE THE TECHNOLOGY GAP BY PROVIDING FREE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING AND RESOURCES TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. THE TECHNOLOGY & COMPUTER TRAINING PROVIDES ADULTS WITH MORE THAN 10.5 HOURS OF BASIC COMPUTER TRAINING (E.G. WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, BEST INTERNET PRACTICES, ETC.), WITH A FOCUS ON HOW THE COMPUTER CAN BE USED AT HOME TO SUPPORT CHILDREN'S EDUCATION. AT THE COMPLETION OF THE TRAINING, EACH GRADUATE RECEIVES A FREE COMPUTER TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING SKILLS AT HOME, AND ENSURE CHILDREN HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER IN THE HOUSE TO EXPAND LEARNING TO THE HOME AND COMPLETE HOMEWORK. IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19, CFAL IS MAKING ALL PROGRAMS AVAILABLE ONLINE, IN ADDITION TO CREATING A VIRTUAL COMPUTER LAB TO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALS WITH MORE SUPPORT. IN 2021, CFAL'S TCT PROGRAM TAUGHT 207 INDIVIDUALS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 19 AND 80, HOW TO USE A COMPUTER. FOLLOWING THE TRAINING, INDIVIDUALS REPORT THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO USE THE SKILLS LEARNED IN THE PROGRAM TO SECURE EMPLOYMENT OR RECEIVE PROMOTIONS.$0$38,496
TECH4TEENS:CFAL'S TECH4TEENS PROGRAM INCREASES DIGITAL LITERACY AND EMPOWERS TEENS/TWEENS, AGES 8 THROUGH 18, TO SHARE THEIR PASSIONS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS THAT THEY CREATE. TECH4TEENS' MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO DEVELOP WEBSITES; CREATE AND EDIT VIDEOS AND PHOTOS; AND BUILD AND CODE ROBOTS. THE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED BY DR. GREGORY MCVERRY, A PROFESSOR AT SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION. DR. MCVERRY ALIGNS THE CURRICULUM WITH COMMON CORE REQUIREMENTS, FURTHER ENSURING THAT THE PROGRAM WILL ENGAGE TEENS WHILE FOSTERING SKILLS NEEDED FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS. THE PROGRAM'S SUCCESS IS GREATLY CONTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS' SELF-SELECTING THEIR PATHWAY (I.E. WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT, VIDEO EDITING, PHOTO EDITING AND/OR ROBOTICS), AND THEN FOCUS ON THEIR PASSIONS WHILE DEVELOPING PROJECTS. SAMPLE LESSONS THAT ALIGN WITH COMMON CORE STANDARDS INCLUDE: - USING A DELIBERATE DESIGN PROCESS TO GENERATE IDEAS FOR A WEBSITE, - EXPRESSING CURIOSITY ABOUT A TOPIC OF PERSONAL INTEREST OR CURRICULAR RELEVANCE WHILE USING COLLABORATIVE TECHNOLOGIES TO PUBLISH A VIDEO, AND - ENGAGING IN INQUIRY-BASED PROCESSES THROUGH DESIGNING AND CODING ROBOTS. THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM, EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE IMPORTANCE OF "OWNING" YOUR CONTENT. STUDENTS LEARN TO CREATE AND MANAGE PERSONAL WEBSITES WHERE THEY CREATE PORTFOLIOS FILLED WITH CONTENT THAT HIGHLIGHTS THEIR PASSIONS ALL THROUGH THE CREATION OF BLOGS, VIDEOS, PHOTOS, AND CODING PROJECTS CREATED AND/OR EDITED BY THEM. FOCUS IS PLACED ON UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POSTING THE SAME CONTENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WHERE THE CONTENT TRANSFERS OWNERSHIP FROM TEENS TO THE RESPECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, AND ALLOWS OTHERS TO ULTIMATELY COMMENT, SHARE OR EVEN MISCONSTRUE THE MESSAGE OR INTENT OF THE ORIGINAL POST. THROUGH TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS, STUDENTS EXPLORE THEIR PASSIONS. AS SUCH THE PROCESS OF CREATING CONTENTS HELPS STUDENTS BUILD ACADEMIC SKILLS SUCH AS ORGANIZE COMPLEX IDEAS, CONCEPTS, AND INFORMATION TO MAKE IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS AND DISTINCTIONS. IN ADDITION, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE THE "BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER" MODULE, LEARNING TO BUILD AND REFURBISH A COMPUTER THAT THEY TAKE HOME AT THE COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM. CFAL'S TECHNOLOGY & COMPUTER TRAINING PROGRAM TEACHES ADULTS, INCLUDING SENIOR CITIZENS, BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS, AND PROVIDES A REFURBISHED COMPUTER TO PARTICIPANTS WHO DO NOT HAVE A WORKING COMPUTER IN THE HOME. DIGITAL LITERACY FOR EARLY LEARNERS (DLEL) PROVIDES EACH FAMILY WITH A CHILD ATTENDING A PRESCHOOL OR PUBLIC SCHOOL PARTNERING WITH CFAL RECEIVES A TABLET PRE-LOADED WITH EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR PRESCHOOLERS AND KINDERGARTENERS. PARENTS ATTEND WORKSHOPS MONTHLY FOCUSED ON BEST PRACTICES TO EXPAND LEARNING TO THE HOME AND TO USE INTERNET SAFELY IN THE HOME. TABLETS ARE MANAGED REMOTELY USING A MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM THAT SECURES DEVICES TO ENSURE THAT ONLY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS CAN BE ACCESSED. FOR EXAMPLE, TABLETS ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS HULU, NETFLIX OR ONLINE VIDEO GAMES AND FAMILIES ARE NOT ABLE TO INSTALL ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS NOT APPROVED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. THIS PLATFORM ALSO ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND HOW TABLETS ARE BEING USED ON A REGULAR BASIS. WITH CLASSDOJO, ZOOM AND GOOGLE MEETS AVAILABLE ON THE TABLET, TEACHERS USE THE DEVICE TO INCREASE PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT. DURING 2020, THE DLEL FOR PRESCHOOL FAMILIES SERVED 88 PARENTS AND CHILDREN. AS A RESULT OF THIS PROGRAM: 90% OF CAREGIVERS REPORTED LEARNING ABOUT THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT THROUGH OUR PROGRAM; 77% OF CAREGIVERS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN STUDENT LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM USING THE TABLETS; AND 85% OF TABLETS WERE USED DAILY BY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO ENGAGE IN EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO THE HOME. DIGITAL LITERACY REDUCES THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP BY PROVIDING LOW-INCOME FAMILIES WITH THE TOOLS NEEDED TO EXPAND EDUCATION AND LITERACY TO THE HOME BY PROVIDING TABLETS FILLED WITH EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS, AND TEACHING CAREGIVERS BEST PRACTICES FOR USING TECHNOLOGY SAFELY IN THE HOME. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS; TEACHES FAMILIES HOW TO BEST USE ONLINE RESOURCES TO EXPAND LEARNING MINIMIZING PRESSURES ON CAREGIVERS DURING THIS STRESSFUL TIME; AND PROVIDES TEACHERS WITH ADDITIONAL TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES THAT WERE NOT ACCESSIBLE DUE TO BUDGETARY RESTRICTIONS. DIGITAL LITERACY FOR EARLY LEARNERS (DLEL) PROVIDES EACH FAMILY WITH A CHILD ATTENDING A PRESCHOOL OR PUBLIC SCHOOL PARTNERING WITH CFAL RECEIVES A TABLET PRE-LOADED WITH EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR PRESCHOOLERS AND KINDERGARTENERS. PARENTS ATTEND WORKSHOPS MONTHLY FOCUSED ON BEST PRACTICES TO EXPAND LEARNING TO THE HOME AND TO USE INTERNET SAFELY IN THE HOME. TABLETS ARE MANAGED REMOTELY USING A MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM THAT SECURES DEVICES TO ENSURE THAT ONLY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS CAN BE ACCESSED. FOR EXAMPLE, TABLETS ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS HULU, NETFLIX OR ONLINE VIDEO GAMES AND FAMILIES ARE NOT ABLE TO INSTALL ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS NOT APPROVED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. THIS PLATFORM ALSO ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND HOW TABLETS ARE BEING USED ON A REGULAR BASIS. WITH CLASSDOJO, ZOOM AND GOOGLE MEETS AVAILABLE ON THE TABLET, TEACHERS USE THE DEVICE TO INCREASE PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT. DURING 2020, THE DLEL FOR PRESCHOOL FAMILIES SERVED 88 PARENTS AND CHILDREN. AS A RESULT OF THIS PROGRAM: 90% OF CAREGIVERS REPORTED LEARNING ABOUT THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT THROUGH OUR PROGRAM; 77% OF CAREGIVERS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN STUDENT LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM USING THE TABLETS; AND 85% OF TABLETS WERE USED DAILY BY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO ENGAGE IN EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO THE HOME. THROUGH PARENT WORKSHOPS, MORE THAN 80% OF ADULTS INCREASED THEIR AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF DANGERS RELATED TO NOT MONITORING CHILDREN'S USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND EXCESS USE OF TECHNOLOGY BY CHILDREN.

AT THE COMPLETION OF THE TRAINING, EACH GRADUATE RECEIVES A FREE COMPUTER TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING SKILLS AT HOME, AND ENSURE CHILDREN HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER IN THE HOUSE TO EXPAND LEARNING TO THE HOME AND COMPLETE HOMEWORK.
