THE POLICY CURRENTLY REQUIRES THAT ALL INTERESTED PERSONS (DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, AND MEMBERS OF COMMITTEES WITH BOARD DELEGATED POWERS) ANNUALLY SUBMIT A SIGNED CONFLICT OF INTEREST STATEMENT DISCLOSING ANY POTENTIAL OR ACTUAL FINANCIAL INTERESTS THAT MAY CREATE AN ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED CONFLICT OF INTEREST AS SET FORTH IN THE POLICY. IF A POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST WERE TO ARISE, IT WOULD BE REVIEWED BY THE BOARD OR APPLICABLE COMMITTEE, WHICH WOULD DETERMINE, AFTER DISCUSSION AND BY MAJORITY VOTE TAKEN WITH ANY INTERESTED PERSONS ABSENT FROM THE MEETING, WHETHER A CONFLICT OF INTEREST EXISTS, WHETHER MORE ADVANTAGEOUS ALTERNATIVES THAT WOULD NOT GIVE RISE TO A CONFLICT OF INTEREST ARE AVAILABLE, AND IF NOT, WHETHER THE TRANSACTION OR ARRANGEMENT IS IN TURNAROUND'S BEST INTEREST, FOR ITS OWN BENEFIT, AND FAIR AND REASONABLE.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, part I, line 1, description of organization mission:

Turnaround for Children's vision is that one day all children in the United States will attend schools that prepare them for the lives they choose. Turnaround's mission is to translate neuroscientific research into tools and strategies for schools with high concentrations of students impacted by adversity, in order to accelerate healthy development and academic achievement. Turnaround is dedicated to the design, development and implementation of scientifically-grounded strategies and practices that transform the teaching and learning environments in chronically low-performing, high-poverty public schools so that all children can succeed. Since 2002, Turnaround has evolved from focusing solely on children's mental health issues into an organization working to understand and address the impact of poverty-related stress and adversity on students and schools. Turnaround achieves this by doing three things: - Proof and Practice: Partnering directly with high-poverty public schools to produce environments that accelerate healthy student development and academic achievement. - Tools and Design: Developing research-driven strategies, practices and tools and measuring the effectiveness of these resources in driving student development in the context of adversity. - Systemic Impact: Disseminating insights and resources that deepen understanding about the connections between poverty, stress and school performance in order to mobilize schools and districts across the country to tackle the impact of adversity on learning.

Form 990, part III, Line 1, description of organization mission:

Turnaround for Children is a nonprofit organization that acts as a catalyst for change by raising awareness about and addressing the challenges that affect any school facing adversity, particularly those in high-poverty communities. Turnaround develops tools and strategies for teachers, administrators and students, grounded in science, that cultivate a safe environment, reduce stress, increase engagement in learning and accelerate student development and academic achievement. Scientific research shows that human brains are malleable and continue to develop into adulthood. Relationships and environments shape the brain for good and for bad. Adversity, including trauma, loss of a loved one, exposure to violence, homelessness, abuse and neglect, poses risks to children's brain development, learning and behavior. A safe school environment filled with trusting relationships can buffer the stress and adversity children may experience. Turnaround is connecting the dots between science, adversity and school performance. Turnaround is using scientific knowledge and its experience working in high-poverty classrooms to design tools and strategies for educators that help put children on a healthier developmental pathway so that they can be successful in school and in life.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

Turnaround for children has a committee that is responsible for oversight of the audit of financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not of being sustained. Management has determined that the Organization had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition Or disclosure. The organization is no longer subject to audits by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for the tax years prior to 2014.

IRS990/Desc0Turnaround for Children is connecting the dots between science, adversity and school performance. Turnaround develops tools and strategies for educators and administrators that cultivate a safe environment, reduce stress, increase engagement in learning and accelerate healthy development and academic achievement. Impact:During the 2016-17 school year, Turnaround partnered with 10 high-poverty public schools and 4 community mental health providers to serve 4,200 students, and trained more than 3,000 teachers, principals and social workers at the public school, Charter Management Organization and district levels. [SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUATION]In 4 of its New York City schools, Turnaround engaged in a research partnership, introducing both teacher and student facing lessons on mindfulness practices and growth mindset. This work on skills and mindsets grew out of Turnaround's Building Blocks for Learning, a framework for comprehensive student development. Usage and efficacy of these practices have been tracked via the headspace app as well as Panorama surveys and are being studied independently by researchers at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Turnaround's evaluation framework includes an extensive set of metrics mapped to our work. These measures include treatment outcomes, classroom observations, behavioral data and student surveys. As Turnaround continues to design, test and measure our tools and strategies, we are seeing indicators of success: Overall: - 100% of school leaders report that they would recommend a partnership with Turnaround for Children.- Third-party observations showed increased levels of teacher awareness, respect for students, positive communication and support for student autonomy and leadership. - Turnaround partner schools scored in the high range for Absence of Negative Climate dimension, based on third-party classroom observations (6.2 in Upper Elementary and 6.6 in K-3, out of 7-point scale).- 84% of students receiving mental health interventions were reported to be "making some progress or "making progress."Washington, D.C.:- 80% of students at Turnaround partner schools reported positive teacher-student relationships. - 85% of students receiving interventions made progress towards their goals - Turnaround partner schools showed increased teacher awareness, respect for students, positive communication and support for student autonomy and leadership.- Turnaround trained more than 250 District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) social workers and psychologists on important concepts, such as how to incorporate a trauma lens in the classroom and how to use reminding and reinforcing language in instruction. 94% of participants reported that they would recommend the services to a colleague, with 37 schools requesting additional support from Turnaround through the end-of-year survey. - Turnaround trained 2,300 DCPS teachers on how to use a trauma-informed lens.- Turnaround trained 22 DCPS principals on how to use a trauma lens in 3 sessions after which 98% said they would recommend attending our training and 85% reported changing their practices as a result of the training. 3 of the superintendents wanted to form formal partnerships as a result of the training.- KIPP DC: In August 2016, Turnaround led a four-day training on foundational science concepts with every KIPP DC staff member - from early childhood to KIPP through College. The training was extremely well-received, with 92% of participants reporting that they would recommend the training to a colleague at a similar school. New York City: - 4 out of 5 partner schools increased their scores for emotional support during the 2016-17 year. - Elementary school teachers reported significant increases in their relationships with school leaders - including trust, respect and care shown for staff by leaders. - Students at Young Voices Academy of the Bronx scored 48% in English Language Arts and 41% in math, exceeding both District 11 and ci
