Activity 2

SHELTER OPERATIONS -- Westhab works with the county to provide temporary housing and services for its homeless families and individuals. Homeless families were housed in a large family shelter that we operated for the county in White Plains. Homeless single men resided in a shelter we operated for the county in Mount Vernon. Westhab provided a wide range of supportive services to enable clients to gain self-sufficiency, including case management, job training and placement, home-finding, life skills, day care, transportation and comprehensive youth development services.

Activity 3

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES -- Employment counselors work at our homeless housing program sites as members of their case management teams. They provide intensive employment readiness training and job development for all adult residents. They refer clients to educational and vocational skills programs and provide them with support and knowledge to help them find, obtain and keep career-track positions. Our counselors also work with teen groups in youth development programs. Our programs also provide service at two community resource centers (Yonkers and Mt. Vernon) and we provide services to the Municipal Housing Authority of Yonkers and to the NYS Department of Parole. Job placement services helped participants get jobs and we administered a wage subsidy program funded by NYSDOL, providing hiring and retention incentives to employers. Westhab also operates a "Reach, Achieve, Prosper" program, working with the most hard-to-serve population on public assistance by providing assessment, referrals, employment readiness training, job search, job placement and retention services. In 2010, Westhab's employment programs placed 379 people in jobs averaging $9.40 per hour, not including youth summer employment.
