Activity 2

Student services programs: includes the cost of health services, recreational athletics, dean of student office expenses and other support services for 1,422 students. Hampshire is one of 40 colleges profiled in colleges that change lives (ctcl) for "developing potential, values, initiative, and risk-taking" in students. Ctcl says of hampshire, "no college has students whose intellectual thyroids are more active or whose minds are more passionately engaged." on any given day, a hampshire student can enjoy 200+ student activities, 100+ student groups, 63 bookstores, 30 museums, 19 art galleries, 21 theater stages, 35 concert venues, 12 dance clubs, 220 bike trails, 69 pizza places, 19 coffee houses, 18 bakeries, 18 delis, 14 health food stores and 68 restaurants that deliver.

Activity 3

Sponsored research and restricted expenses: includes all private and federal funds for sponsored research and restricted activities. Grants from corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies support everything from construction to program development to individual faculty research. The following are grants recently awarded to hampshire college: institutional grants: the mellon foundation awarded $850,000 to hampshire college for a three year grant supporting the transition of faculty into retirement while mentoring new faculty members. This program is called "the bridge to retirement: facilitating institutional change." the national science foundation awarded $181,159 for an nsf ubm. Collaborative research: four college biomath consortium that facilitates creating a biomathematics community dedicated to training emerging scholars. The nsf also awarded hampshire a grant of $36,403 called "the workshop on cultural property, creativity, and indigeneity under the new bolivian constitution" which facilitated bringing participants together from across bolivia to discuss current issues facing bolivians. Hampshire college received an anonymous gift of $383,612 to support campus-wide environmental and sustainability programs. The massachusetts society for the promotion of agriculture (mspa) provided a matching grant of $20,000 to purchase and install a 26 gallon vat for processing on-farm value-added dairy products. The society for analytical chemists of pittsburgh awarded $10,000 to hampshire for spectrochemical research across the undergraduate analytical curriculum. The tern foundation provided a grant of $16,000 to support a collaborative project between hampshire college and the william r. Peck school called "unconditional positive regard (upr): a creative practice in education, design, and social justice." the marion and jasper whiting foundation awarded three faculty members grants for travel and research. The awards totaled $22,502. Program grants: the academy of motion picture arts and sciences awarded $7,000 for student internships in the entertainment industry internship program at hampshire college. The graham foundation for advanced studies in the fine arts awarded $15,000 to support the havana archive project. The andrew w. Mellon foundation provided a grant of $250,000 to facilitate transforming hampshire college into a language learning community center by engaging other disciplines to utilize their skills in foreign environments. The luce foundation awarded hampshire a grant of $50,000 to support research focuses around food, sustainability, and climate change in east asia.
