Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To give young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Books-sustainability: every prospective active reach out and read site is asked to supply evidence of fundraising ability and community support, and the program's goal is that sites develop increasing financial self-reliance. However, the reach out and read national center provides limited sustainability funding awards to thriving reach out and read sites, in order to help them continue to serve their patients, and to leverage local fundraising for their reach out and read program. See schedule o books-sustainability: the reach out and read national center distributed sustainability funds for book purchases more than 3,000 reach out and read sites, all of which demonstrated compliance with the three-part reach out and read model for one year after beginning the program. To qualify for sustainability books, reach out and read sites document that they are providing a high-quality pediatric literacy intervention in compliance with the reach out and read model, books to children at well-child visits, and must demonstrate well-developed fundraising plans and/or fundraising success. More than 1,663,000 books were given to children in high need communities.
Activity 3
Coalitions: the regional structure of sustainability book funds of reach out and read is increasingly organized into state and regional coalitions. The reach out and read national center has focused on building capacity at the coalition level in order to make it possible for new clinical locations to receive technical support, training, and fundraising assistance on a state or local level, and to form important connections with other sites, with professional associations, and with potential funders. See schedule o coalitions: twenty-seven (27) well-managed reach out and read coalitions supplement the outreach efforts of the national center by working with local and regional medical organizations such as local chapters of the american academy of pediatrics, the american academy of family physicians, and the national association of pediatric nurse practitioners. Coalitions take four different structural forms, eleven are part of the american academy of pediatrics, seven are their own 501(c)(3), seven our housed within other institutions including hospitals, and universities, and seven are fiscally sponsored within the reach out and read national center. Each coalition is led by a coalition leader and a medical director, and some employ additional full-time or part-time staff. The reach out and read national center works directly with the coalition leaders and medical directors to build capacity around fundraising, training, site support, communications, and advocacy.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0BOOKS-SUSTAINABILITY: EVERY PROSPECTIVE ACTIVE REACH OUT AND READ SITE IS ASKED TO SUPPLY EVIDENCE OF FUNDRAISING ABILITY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND THE PROGRAM'S GOAL IS THAT SITES DEVELOP INCREASING FINANCIAL SELF-RELIANCE.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0FORM 990 PART 1, LINE 1 REACH OUT AND READ (ROR) PREPARES AMERICAS YOUNGEST CHILDREN TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL BY PARTNERING WITH DOCTORS TO PRESCRIBE BOOKS AND ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO READ TOGETHER. DOCTORS, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, AND OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS INCORPORATE REACH OUT AND READ'S EVIDENCE-BASED MODEL INTO REGULAR PEDIATRIC CHECKUPS, BY ADVISING PARENTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF READING ALOUD AND GIVING DEVELOPMENTALLY-APPROPRIATE BOOKS TO CHILDREN. THE PROGRAM BEGINS AT THE 6-MONTH CHECKUP AND CONTINUES THROUGH AGE 5, WITH A SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON CHILDREN GROWING UP IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES. FAMILIES SERVED BY REACH OUT AND READ READ TOGETHER MORE OFTEN, AND THEIR CHILDREN ENTER KINDERGARTEN WITH LARGER VOCABULARIES AND STRONGER LANGUAGE SKILLS, BETTER PREPARED TO ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL. FORM 990 PART III, LINE 1 REACH OUT AND READ PREPARES AMERICA'S YOUNGEST CHILDREN TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL BY PARTNERING WITH DOCTORS TO PRESCRIBE BOOKS AND ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO READ TOGETHER. PEDIAT
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description01) TRAINING: THE TRAINING CURRICULUM FOR MEDICAL PROVIDERS IS THE CORE OF THE REACH OUT AND READ PROGRAM; TO OFFER THIS EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTION, MEDICAL PROVIDERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO INTEGRATE BOOKS INTO WELL-CHILD CARE AND HOW TO PROVIDE DEVELOPMENTALLY-APPROPRIATE, ANTICIPATORY GUIDANCE TO PARENTS-STRATEGIES WHICH HELP THEM ENJOY BOOKS WITH THEIR YOUNG CHILDREN. PHYSICIANS ALSO USE THE BOOKS AS TOOLS TO ASSESS COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT. THE NATIONAL CENTER REQUIRES TRAINING OF PEDIATRIC PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS AND OTHER STAFF AT EACH REACH OUT AND READ SITE, USING A STANDARDIZED REACH OUT AND READ ON-LINE CURRICULUM. THIS TRAINING IS CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION(CME) THROUGH THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS. WORKSHOPS ARE ARRANGED AT LARGER SITES, WITH THE TRAINING LED BY AN EXPERIENCED PHYSICIAN TRAINER. THE PROVIDER TRAINING INCLUDES REVIEW OF THE PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH ON THE REACH OUT AND READ INTERVENTION, DISCUSSION OF THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF EMERGENT LITERACY, AND DETAILED TRAINING IN SPECIFIC STRATEGIES FOR INTEGRATING BOOKS AND LITERACY GUIDANCE INTO INTERACTIONS WITH FAMILIES IN THE EXAM ROOM. REACH OUT AND READ COALITIONS ALSO COME TOGETHER TWO TIMES ANNUALLY. THE 27 REACH OUT AND READ COALITION LEADERS, MEDICAL DIRECTORS, AND FIELD LEADERSHIP CONVENE AS A GROUP WITH SENIOR REACH OUT AND READ STAFF AND CONSULTANTS FOR INTERACTIVE TRAINING AND QUALITY ASSURANCE MEETINGS TWO TIMES DURING THE YEAR. ROR ALSO PRODUCES AND DISTRIBUTES LITERACY MATERIALS (WHICH INCLUDE A PROGRAM MANUAL, AND PRINTED MATERIALS DESCRIBING DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES OF EARLY LITERACY DEVELOPMENT) TO HELP PHYSICIANS PROVIDE THE REACH OUT AND READ INTERVENTION TO CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. (2) TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR PROGRAM SITES AND COALITIONS: THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER PROGRAMS STAFF AND REGIONAL COALITIONS, PROVIDE ONGOING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO EACH SITE FOR ALL THREE COMPONENTS OF THE MODEL. THE PROGRAM RELIES ON HIGH-QUALITY SITES, WITH WELL TRAINED AND WELL SUPPORTED PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS. IT IS THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER'S GOAL TO SUPPORT THESE SITES AND THESE PROVIDERS, SO THAT WE ENSURE THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE PROGRAM QUALITY. COALITION LEADERS REGULARLY VISIT SITES AND ASSESS THEIR PROGRAM DELIVERY, AND REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER PROGRAMS STAFF AND THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER MEDICAL DIRECTOR VISIT COALITIONS AND SELECTED SITES. IN ADDITION, THE ROR NATIONAL CENTER PROVIDES SITES WITH HANDOUTS FOR PARENTS AND BROCHURE TEMPLATES TO HELP IMPLEMENT THE MODEL. THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER'S WEBSITE HAS BECOME AN INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TOOL IN PROVIDING TECHNICAL SUPPORT, AS WELL AS CURRENT INFORMATION ON RESEARCH, AND PUBLIC POLICY RELATING TO LITERACY. (3) LITERACY MATERIALS RELATED TO PEDIATRIC LITERACY PROMOTION: THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER PRODUCES TRAINING MATERIALS FOR PROVIDERS, INCLUDING A PROGRAM MANUAL, AND AN ONLINE CME COURSE. THE REACH OUT AND READ NATIONAL CENTER ALSO DESIGNS AND PRODUCES MATERIALS FOR PROVIDERS TO USE IN THE EXAM ROOM WHEN THEY ARE DISCUSSING BOOKS AND READING WITH PARENTS, INCLUDING CHARTS SHOWING THE DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES OF EARLY LITERACY (AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH, SPANISH, VIETNAMESE AND CHINESE), TAKE-HOME BOOKMARKS WITH AGE-SPECIFIC TIPS FOR PARENTS ABOUT READING TO INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND PRESCHOOLERS (AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH OR SPANISH.) IN ADDITION, REACH OUT AND READ PRODUCES STICKERS, PRESCRIPTION PADS (READING PRESCRIPTIONS), POSTERS, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS. (4) NATIONAL EXPANSION NATIONAL EXPANSION INCLUDES EXPENSES TO HELP BUILD PARTNERSHIPS, INFRASTRUCTURE, AND CAPACITY IN IDENTIFIED AREAS, RECRUITING STRONG PHYSICIAN CHAMPIONS WHO CAN THEN HELP LEVERAGE THIS INFRASTRUCTURE TO RECRUIT NEW SITES AND EXPAND SERVICE DELIVERY OF THE REACH OUT AND READ MODEL.
