FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Company one theatre was founded in 1998 to integrate boston audiences, challenge the city's social divides and foster a new generation of theatre-makers and theatregoers. Since then we have become a nationally renowned, award-winning theatre company in residence at the boston center for the arts. Mission: company one theatre builds community at the intersection of art and social change. Vision: a boston defined by justice, equity, and artistic innovation. Manifesto: welcome to our community, where every audience member, artist, student, and supporter has the opportunity to fight for social justice. At company one: we strive to create intentional, authentic theatrical experiences that uniquely integrate content, style, space, and community. We amplify new stories and adventurous theatrical forms to define what's next in the american theatre. We focus on growing our students' authority, voice, and point of view, while developing artists into the next generation of change-makers. Our work is responsive to what's happening in our city, nation, and world. We work towards justice by challenging inequity and oppressive systems. Innovation, forward thinking, and collaboration lead the way. We center our work on reciprocal relationships with community partners. Representation is an act of social justice. Our growth is motivated by questioning the status quo, internally and externally. We strive for artistic excellence as defined by our collective community.

Artistic programs: stage productions - c1's award winning productions reach over 6,000 patrons annually and serve boston's most diverse audiences. Entertaining and socially relevant plays take place in collaboration with partners across the boston area. In the fiscal year in the fiscal year ended august 31, 2019, company one produced three successful stage plays: two were in collaboration with the american repertory theater, one at the oberon theater and the other at the commonwealth school; and one at the boston center for the arts in collaboration with the boston chinatown neighborhood center/pao arts center. Ticket prices are kept affordable, including pay- what-you-want performances, student tickets, discount offers and 25 full priced tickets for early shows in each run. We employed over 60 local artists and production staff during the season. C1 playlab: amplifies new voices and creates points of access into a professional theatre company - particularly for women, people of color, and writers without affiliations with graduate training programs - and to provide these writers with the tools and resources necessary to grow and collaborate not only as artists but as activists. Fellows level gives playwrights one-on-one dramaturgical support towards the creation of a new full-length play. The unit, focused on early career playwrights, offers a series of master classes focusing on, not only writing, but career and network development. Playlab bootcamp: offers intensive professional development master classes staffed by artistic leaders from the local and national fields, focusing on new work development. Offered for free through a partnership with the boston public library.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Education programs: stage one: in-school - a partnership with boston public schools, providing school day instruction serving 6 high schools and 1 middle school, reaching over 400 students. The program is flexible and comprehensive, and the curriculum integrates personal skill development, group dynamics, communication, writing, and performance while focusing on student-written work. Stage one: apprentice program - working with the city of boston's dept. Of youth employment & engagement, abcd summerworks, and madison park development corporation, the program offers employment for boston teens. Designed to develop boston high school students' 21st century workforce skills including communication and collaboration, adaptability and flexibility, and critical thinking. Professional development for actors- low cost classes designed for working actors and those new to the profession. These classes, run by professional acting coaches and directors, help actors continue to develop their performance skills while preparing them for auditions. Class graduates have gone on to work in nearly every theatre in boston. Connectivity & engagement programs: making deep connections and expanding our network and impact by building long-term relationships with invested community partners. Social action - working with organizational partners to provide tangible opportunities to affect change in our communities. Examples of this have been registering our community members to vote at our events; providing opportunities for our audiences to learn about human rights issues and sign petitions of support; connecting our community with female health advocacy resources, and providing opportunities for policy work; aids testing support for our lgbtq+ communities; and group mediation on issues of race and class. Pre- and post-show events - dialogues and workshops led with partner organizations for our audiences that engage participants in conversations centered around exploring key social issues addressed in the work being presented on stage. Lobby interaction - interactive stations offer contextual information on the play, its themes, and its social questions, curated in a variety of styles to reach audiences in diverse ways, including: visual galleries, interactive video, participant response installations, and community partner resources. Audiences are invited to take action beyond the performance, to engage, and be educated in the ideas fueling our work.
