Mission

SEE PAGE 1, QUESTION 1.

The mission of hyde square task force is to develop the skills of youth and their families so they are empowered to enhance their own lives and build a strong and vibrant urban community. Hstf was founded by a coalition of neighbors in response to the pervasive poverty, limited opportunity, and ongoing violence which defined our neighborhood in the late 1980s. Established as a nonprofit organization in 1991, hstf has spent decades building and refining our renowned youth community development programming, which has been driven by the young people of our neighborhood, their families, and community members. Over the past 25 years, one fundamental belief has guided our work: as young people transform themselves, they transform our communities. Drawing upon the rich afro latin culture in boston's latin quarter, hstf provides renowned arts enrichment programming, a multi-year college and career success pipeline, and ambitious community organizing and creative placemaking initiatives which p

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0LIFELONG LEARNING- HSTF YOUTH LEADERS BENEFIT FROM ACCESS TO OUR HOLISTIC MULTI-YEAR COLLEGE AND CAREER PIPELINE. THE MAJORITY OF THE 120 YOUNG PEOPLE WE SERVE ANNUALLY ARE YOUTH OF COLOR, COME FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS, AND ARE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. THEY FACE INNUMERABLE BARRIERS AS THEY STRIVE TO COMPLETE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE AND SECURE STABLE EMPLOYMENT UPON GRADUATION. OUR PROGRAMMING IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BUILD UPON OUR YOUTH LEADERS' STRENGTHS AND ENSURE THEIR SUCCESS. THEY ARE PAIRED WITH DEDICATED MENTORS FROM LOCAL COLLEGES OR FROM THE COMMUNITY AND ARE SUPPORTED BY SEASONED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM STAFF. THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL, YOUTH LEADERS AND THEIR MENTORS EXPLORE COLLEGE AND CAREERS THROUGH HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD THEIR TRANSFERRABLE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS IN COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, AND PERSONAL MANAGEMENT. THEY ALSO ACCESS DROP-IN AND APPOINTMENT-BASED ACADEMIC TUTORING IN THEIR CORE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS. OUR SENIORS WORK WITH THEIR MENTORS TO DRAFT COLLEGE ESSAYS, PREPARE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS, SUBMIT FINANCIAL AID PAPERWORK, AND ENROLL IN THEIR COLLEGE OF CHOICE AFTER THEIR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. ONCE THEY ARRIVE ON THEIR COLLEGE CAMPUS, HSTF YOUTH LEADERS WORK WITH COLLEGE SUCCESS COACHES TO BALANCE THEIR COURSE LOAD, MANAGE THEIR FINANCIAL AID AWARD, MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH, AND INDEPENDENTLY ACCESS CAMPUS RESOURCES AS THEY WORK TOWARD EARNING THEIR DEGREE.
